We try and teach our children not to whine, or to get angry if they do not get their way. Or do not get what they want.
I can remember a girl named Gretchen who, bless her heart, had the art of whining down to a tee. One particular time we were all voting in our fifth grade class on what project we wanted to do, we had three to choose from. Of the 32 kids all agreed on project three but Gretchen, who immediately said in her whiny voice, “I don’t want to do that one, it will be no fun and we have to do it outside the majority of the time. I can’t be out in the sun and I think that we should vote again!” This story went with her through school, as she continued in her whining ways.
We sometimes show these same characteristics in how we present ourselves. We show our loved ones, spouses, co-worker or our boss the unpleasant side of us when we start to whine. It’s unbecoming in our kids, so what do we look and sound like?
We show it in our being fans of a sport, or a well-known celebrity. If they perform to our expectations, which are usually high, then we are happy. But if they have a bad game, or performance or maybe just ok, then let the whining begin.
As adults we sometimes do just as much or more than our children do. We don’t seem to pick up on our own whining but are quick to pick it up in others.
Christians can and do a lot of this when they ask the Lord for help or guidance in their life and this stems back to the Old Testament times, for instance look at the whining and complaining the Israelites did. True they had a rough time, but they never fully trusted God. God was right there with them. Over the two thousand years we have not changed much.
We come to Him and tell Him our woes, and then immediately expect an answer to our problems then. If we have to wait, then the whining can be heard throughout Heaven, wait a minute, maybe not heard throughout, they are probably filtered and rightly so.
Christians that have got beyond this childish behavior have learned that this is not our life anymore; we gave up our old life to follow our Lord and Savior. We put off the old and put on the new!
We strive to walk in His paths. To go the way He has laid out for us. It’s not easy but it can be done and is very rewarding.
I cringe when people say ‘we are only human’ which is a true statement but it does not give us the right to live our lives carelessly. We will make mistakes and sin, but we need to go to the Father and ask for forgiveness, as we strive ‘not’ to do it again.
It is not wrong to be tempted but it is how we handle the temptation that matters. Remembering that God always gives us a way out!
If we walk in His path, His will for each of us will be known and we will have no need to whine, or get angry, stomp or fuss.
But we will have joy, love, peace, that can only come through Jesus as we walk with Him.
Nobody cares for whiners, but somehow God still does as He tries to steer us to His perfect will for each of our lives. Why do we make is so difficult for ourselves? I think we all know that answer for we still let our ‘will’ get in the way of His will and living for Him…..
