It was amazing how similar our growing up years were. We both lived in bustling towns our first years, then moved to the quiet country. Neither of us grew up in a house where water flowed from a faucet, food was kept fresh in a refrigerator or a telephone jangled merrily from time to time. Both of us were in church services twice on Sunday and every Wednesday night, too. We grew up hundreds of miles apart and then met within a few days of entering college.
At first we were together because of mutual friends, then we were together because of mutual interest. Marriage followed and in due time three bubbly, precious daughters joined our family. Days were filled with the duties of life, the children grew up, we grew old.
It was a normal day off, a sun-washed. spring day fifty years ago: a fast-food lunch stop and shopping at the big department store. The brilliant, orange color caught my eye, a small, oblong piece of pressed glass, no more than six inches long, displayed in the gift section of the store. I reached for the object, turned it in my hand, admired the sparkle as the lights danced in its crevices. The cost was just ninety-eight cents. Less than a dollar. I placed the little dish in my basket, then, pausing, placed it back on the shelf. I really didn’t need that pretty glass. The money could be used for something far more important.
I finished my shopping and made my way to the car where we planned to meet. Arriving before my husband there was ample time to think about that flaming-orange dish, how pretty and desirable it was.
My husband appeared around the corner. His brisk walk allowed him to cover the distance in a few strides. He slid into the driver’s seat, and pushed a small brown bag into my lap in one, fluid motion.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“For you,” he said, “because I love you.”
My heart raced and sizzled as I opened the bag, peered in and saw….THE LITTLE ORANGE DISH!
A true story.
