Of course I’m still awake. I’m sleeping on the cold hard ground.
“Yes.” I said. “I can’t sleep.” I admitted.
“Neither can I. I feel almost like I’m in shock. But in a good way. Like I can’t believe this is happening.” He said softly. Sweetly. I smiled.
“I understand. Truly I do. I feel the same way. You will never know how much this means to me.” Or how much you mean to me.
“Is this what you want?” The tentative question floated to my ears.
“What do you mean?” I asked. I was so tired. I just couldn’t get comfortable with that rock poking me in the back.
“Do you want to be stuck with me? I’ll be completely honest with you-I care for you. I have since the moment I laid eyes on you. But that doesn’t mean you feel the same for me.” His voice was strong and confident, but I could also hear the vulnerability entwined with his words.
But only one part really mattered to me.
He cared for me.
He cared for me!
The words made me want to stand up and dance! To shout for joy! In all my trials and hardships, God had taken care of me and brought me to someone who would love, honor, and care for me.
Excitement is a mild description of how I felt.
I realized I still hadn’t answered him, “YES!” I nearly shouted.
Whoops.
“I do. I care for you as well.” I said again, lowering my voice this time.
“I’m glad.” Relief and joy evident in his voice. I could almost see the smile on his handsome face.
We settled into silence. I could hear the slight wind blowing. Other people who were still enjoying themselves in the distance. I rolled flat onto my back and stared up into the sky. It was beautiful.
Just like what God was doing here. With us.
“Can I ask you something?” He asked, breaking the silence.
“Of course. Anything.”
“How did you do it? Leave your home? Come here? Commit to serving God? How did you persuade her into letting you come? I think it’s amazing how you’ve stuck by her and cared for her.” He passionately stated.
“That’s more than one question,” I teased.
“You said anything. So I decided to ask you all my questions at once. I figured it might save some time.” He teased back.
I chuckled. “Well, it wasn’t easy.” It was terrifying. “But my life has been so much better since I’ve know her. She’s so wonderful! And the thought of losing her felt like another death too great to bear.” My mind wandered to that painful season in my life…
“So the answer seemed obvious. Go with her. As for coming to serve God, it started out as an experiment. I could see the difference in Naomi’s life. I wanted to try it. If it didn’t work, well, I tried. But it did work. My experiment with God turned into the best decision of my life. It led me here, kept me with Naomi, and brought me to you.” I said softly.
“Your commitment is amazing. You are amazing. And you’re wonderful.” He sweetly said.
“You are wonderful and amazing, too.” I said softly.
“I promise I will be worthy of you. I promise your commitment will only be a faint glimmer compared to my commitment to you. I promise you, Ruth.” He stated with a passion and conviction that sent shivers down my spine.
And all I could say was, “Thank you, Boaz. Thank you.”
