"Yes I did-quite impressive."
"Quite impressive? That is all you have to say?"
"What do you want me to say? You asked a question and I answered."
"Yes you did answer, but I was surprised you didn't elaborate."
"Me? Elaborate? I am the antithesis of elaborate. My nickname is brevity. Are you forgetting this?"
"Okay. Well I will do it for both of us then."
"I was afraid of that."
"She just made partner at her law firm, her salary is in the high six figures! She has a penthouse with the most breathtaking views of Central Park. And the company car is a Mercedes top of the line. I am absolutely green with envy."
"Yes I did see all of that in her profile. I just hope she is happy."
"Happy? Are you out of your mind? Who the heck wouldn't be happy?"
"Marie money and materialistic stuff is just that, stuff. I don't want to go all cliché on you but money does not buy happiness, or love."
"It could for me. She has about 800,000 people following her on her twitter account. People are fascinated by her! She is the attorney for so many high profile people."
"Well God Bless her. I just pray she is happy."
"Misty how can you keep repeating that? Are you insane?"
"No just realistic- and trying to bring you to a higher level of understanding Marie without sounding condescending."
"You can never be condescending even if you tried Misty. You are the person everyone turns to and the one who keeps us grounded. However this is something I don't get."
"Why is that?"
"Don't you ever dream of being rich?"
"No. I am rich."
"You are a pauper."
"Well not quite a pauper Marie. I am speaking about my Lord. I have an intimate relationship with Him, I love Him. Don't you see He is everything? I am filled with His love and I have all that I need… and in the realm of Spirituality I am beyond rich."
"Wow look at the latest twitter comment from Nancy. She is going to fly to Paris for a week and going to dinner with royalty!"
"I have to get going Marie. I will leave you to your fantasy life of following these allegedly happy people."
"I will talk to you later Misty."
Misty stopped and turned around and asked the same question she has been asking for years.
"Are you interested in attending my church this weekend? I can come to pick you up."
"No thanks Misty."
"Okay I will see you on Monday. Have a blessed weekend."
Misty walked to the subway station earplugs securely in place while listening to the Gospel of Matthew. She smiled and thought of her husband and her dog waiting at home for her. She lived a life filled with love and peace, and tonight was homeless shelter night. She and her husband helped out on weekends, and they knew all of the patron’s names. It was a Christian mission center and many lost souls were "fed"- their lives turned around. It was rewarding and fulfilling.
Misty closed her eyes and leaned back to listen to the word of God.
"Why wouldn't Marie ever understand-without God everyone is poor and bereft of all. To be spiritually bankrupt is a sad and lonely life irrespective of your bank account. She would never give up on her friend-the way Jesus never gave up on her."
==============================================================
Way across town in a multimillion dollar penthouse in the sky there was a woman crying. She was sitting on her white couch drinking cognac. She was totally miserable inside and out. She was lost and didn't know why, and so scared.
She had what everyone could only dream about, yet she was miserable; with no purpose in life and no one special that she cared about. She was lonely and scared half the time.
She threw her Waterford crystal snifter against the wall and sobbed uncontrollably...many minutes later she had a haunting thought.
She went over to the desk and opened the drawer and she pulled it out. She had it in there for so many years and finally was going to use it. She stared at it pensively-then she finally did it.
"Hello?"
"Misty I want what you have; can I come to church with you this Sunday?"

Your heart for God shines through, once again, on this story. The lesson is so very true and you hit the nail on the head in addressing the fascination the world has with celebrity - and the accounts of their lives - a theme within the them of social media.
Excellent use of dialogue to progress the story and I loved the ending - a life so full of "stuff," void of relationship with God, carries a yearning that cannnot be filled with anything but Him.
Terrific story, well done!
This story makes you ponder too, how many comments that you read on social media sites, show a different picture behind the scenes. It is so easy to make things look wonderful in the “face” people choose to show the world…but it is Jesus that sees behind the flowery profiles and looks at the hearts and knows the truth.
I hope this story makes it beyond FaithWriters because its message is so vital in a materialistic world and especially at the holiday season. Terrific job!
