I’ll be getting out of bed after lunch. They’re letting me have a lie in because it’s my birthday. The truth is dear, I feel quite weary today. It’s not like me I know. Maybe I’m coming down with something. I haven’t been on top form all week.
The cleaning girl called in to see me before she left. She brought me a lovely cotton nightdress. Said it was just me, with the daisy pattern embroidered around the neckline. Wasn’t that kind of her? I’d told her about me making daisy chains for the children to wear. She was tickled pink at that one, she was. The kiddies don’t know how to make their own fun anymore do they!
Anyways she helped me into the nightie. It was a bit of a struggle this morning. These old bones are giving me some stick lately. And then she stood back and grinned and those cute little dimples showed up. She’s full of mischief that one. But she did seem to lack sparkle this morning, that cheeky glint in her eye, when she knows that I know she’s teasing me. She gave me a huge hug, and left quickly. Something’s troubling that girl today. I have a nose for these things.
Oh silly me, I forgot to tell you. I got a telegram from Her Majesty this morning. Well I never! Bless her. It doesn’t seem two minutes since the Coronation does it? And her Philip is looking so well for his age. I wonder if she’ll send him a telegram when he becomes a Centurion. Now there’s a thought!
What are you smiling at dear? Did I say something funny?
I need to gather myself together before long. They’re making me a little tea party. It’s because I’m 36,500 today. I was bit surprised at that. I didn’t think I was such an old biddy. But they know I like a bit of fun so I went along with it.
They’re such a lively bunch of youngsters, God love ‘em. Some of them came over here to study. The little Filipino girl is having a hard time understanding our customs. She thinks the Queen‘s coming to my party.
Sorry dear, did I just nod off for a moment? It’s not like me to do that is it? Goodness me, is that the time. I’ve missed lunch. Never mind, I don’t feel very hungry yet. I’ll save my appetite for the party.
Oh here comes my favourite boyfriend. C’mon handsome, oooh how I wish I was 80 years younger. Have you come to help me get into my chair? Oh dear, I’m so sorry … I seem to have had a little accident. I can’t understand that. It’s not like me.
Bless him, he told me not to worry; it’s nothing he said, but to tell you the truth I’m rather upset by it. He had to fetch the little Filipino girl to help him change the bed. Neither one mentioned it, they just chatted about my party and how well I look for my 36,500th big day.
They’ve brought me a bowl for a ‘top and tail.’ I did protest a little, but secretly I’m relieved because just thinking about the shower wears me out. There’ll be a picture of me in the newspaper next week and, oh … could you pass me my bottom dentures from the top drawer. I’ll need to dazzle ‘em with my biggest smile.
We’re off now. I’m going to muster every ounce of strength that I have to enjoy myself. God love ‘em for the effort they’ve put into this.
Are you there dear? I knew you’d wait for me. I’ve done them proud. They’ll have pleasant memories to look back on.
Now I think it’s time we were on our way. I’ve missed you dreadfully these 30 years.
A little after midnight, the nurse opened the door. Polly wasn’t making a sound. She tip toed over to the bed and waited a while, before gently closing the eye lids and pulling up the sheet.
