“Wow—when I stepped through the doors in my wedding dress into the church, all I could think about was ‘Does my hair look okay?’ because everyone was takin’ pictures—I felt like they were the paparazzi and I was the star.”
“Awww, but you ARE my star, my little sweet cheeks. I am so happy, I think I could dance.”
“Awww, Bob, I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Joette picked up the remote control and paused the recording. “I wanted you to see this, Mom and Dad. Over the years, you both have withdrawn from each other to the point of it being ridiculous.”
“Now hold on just a minute here, little Jo—” Bob interrupted Joette.
“No—you hold on just a minute, dad. You need to hear me out.”
“Okay Joette, we’ll listen to ya—won’t we, Bob?”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, I s’pose.”
“Much better. Now watch the next part.” Joette hit the play button on the remote control.
On the wide screen monitor in high definition, the old film converted to digital showed Bob and Marcia dancing very slowly, looking into each other’s eyes. When the music stopped, they kissed.
Joette paused the recording again.
“I know this was a long time ago, but you both were so much in love—and so open about it—that you didn’t care who saw or heard you at the gift opening party.”
“But, little Jo, that was such a long time ago—back in the 1900s.”
“Yes, it was a long time ago. But love never fails. Remember the scripture you had Murray read at your wedding?”
“Oh, I know Jo, it was the love chapter.”
“That’s right, mom. To remind you, I’m going to read part of it again. While I’m reading it, I want you to stare at yourselves, kissing on that screen, and remember. Remember your first love. Here it is, 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13, verses 4 through 13:
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
“I’m sorry, Jo, every time I hear that, I remember the day I married your father, and I cry.”
“Awwww, don’t you start with the weepin’, Marcia.”
“Why’s that, dad, is it because are you afraid?”
“I ain’t afraid-a nothin’.”
“It looks like you are afraid of crying—afraid to feel anything. I have a question: do you both still love each other?”
“Of course, Jo, I love your dad.”
“Of course, little Jo.”
“Okay, then…why—just about 24 hours ago—were you arguing and bickering with each other so much? and right here in my house, during a Birthday party with your grandkids?”
“I s’pose I been a little hard on Marcia…”
“Here, let’s look at this again.” Joette tapped the rewind button on the remote control. “Listen to yourselves.”
“Just about this time yesterday, I was so totally nervous.”
“Oh, Joette, you have a way of makin’ a point… Bob, please forgive me for all the things I said.”
“Please forgive me, Marcia.”
“Now you two are makin’ me cry.”
They embraced.
