I come downstairs and there's Grandma, an open Bible, her journal and colorful markers doing what she does every morning. I sat down at the breakfast table with my Blackberry texting away with numerous friends about all we were going to do this Thanksgiving break.
"Good morning, Sugar-pie." she lovingly calls me, but I barely looked up from my texting.
"Oh, cat got your tongue?" she said.
I continue texting, not missing a word.
"No, Mother fed the cat," I replied without moving my eyes or fingers from my possession. Mom always feeds the cat before work, she must be forgetting...
"You and that phone are joined at the hip," Grandmother said in an exasperated tone.
I look up..."A sip of what?" I looked around and didn't see any OJ on the table. Does she want me to get her something? ...Oh, a text...
"Kaitlyn, you have your head in the clouds with that phone thing in your hands 24-7. We cannot communicate!"
I answered Gram, but she looked at me funny.
"Yes, Gram, it’s supposed to be cloudy today."
"...and I thought your Grandpa was hard of hearing. You have him beat by leaps and bounds. You are not making a lick of sense this morning."
"Grandpa sounds sick? Did he get the flu shot? You know how he hates needles."
Shaking her head at me, Grandma gave me that concerned look. I really think she is getting a little of that "old-timers" disease. I should say something to Mom if she hasn't already noticed herself.
BBBZZZZZZZZ, the phone vibrates and whirs across the table. I quickly begin to text back.
"KAITLYN!" My grandma screams my name. It startles me and I drop the phone in my bowl of cereal. What? Why is Grandma LOL? This is not funny, this will ruin my life today... I am beginning to hyperventilate.
"Don't cry over spilled milk, Kate. This will be a blessing in disguise."
"What? The milk didn't spill--my phone...a blessing?" I quickly grabbed a towel to try and dry it off.
My grandma takes my phone gently from me and starts to wipe it down. "Kaitlyn, If God had a cell phone, what would He text you?"
I suddenly heard every one of those thought-provoking words. I sat down next to her, viewing her open Bible, highlighted, scribbled in and underlined. I grabbed the pen and wrote in her journal:
BTW WUWH TMOT LV GOD :)
“FYI Grandma, that means ‘By the way, wish you were here. Trust me on this. Love, God.’ "
I looked into her wise and very bright eyes and told her, “God doesn't need a cell phone Grams. He already gave us His Word. I guess I have not been reading His ‘messages’ very well lately or listening to His voice."
"Kaitlyn, because God wants the very best for us, He sometimes has to get our attention, and that may mean sacrifice. It's when we listen and obey, we will receive His blessing. Leave your phone here. I'll see if I can dry it out."
"Thanks Gramma...I mean for the reminder too. I'll go check on Grandpa."
My grandmother just smiled and said to me, "Remind him that the early bird gets the worm and he better hit the deck so we can get this show on the road this morning."
I thought Grandpa was sick?
