Connie had gotten up early Saturday morning and was sitting at the kitchen table drinking her coffee engrossed in the Sunday school lesson plan for the 8 year olds when Jake walked into the kitchen, gave her a peck on the top of her head and got a cup of coffee before he spoke. “Good morning Sunshine. You’re up awfully early. What’s with the look on your face? Something has you perplexed so spit it out and just maybe we can put our heads together and solve this problem.”
Connie raised her eyes as she pushed herself away from the table and looked at Jake. “Honey, I’m trying to teach our class about creation and make it as interesting and enjoyable as Mrs. Brooks made ours. She had the gift of teaching and her classes has stuck with me all these years. I want to make our Sunday school class as exciting where the children want to come every week to learn about creation.”
Jake placed his hands on Connie’s cheeks looking deeply into her eyes. “Honey, what was the one thing that Mrs. Brooks did or said that made you remember her classes on creation?”
Connie placed her arms around Jakes waist and with a look of deep concentration on her face. “Honey Mrs. Brooks impacted many lives. She truly loves God. I loved being around her and looked forward to attending her class every Sunday. She made each child feel special. She made us feel loved and accepted for who we were. She made teaching the class of God’s creation enjoyable and that big felt board helped us to understand the story, because we not only read, but saw it as she placed all of creation on that board from beginning to end.”
Jake looked lovingly into Connie’s eyes. “The one thing that has stayed with me was the question she asked about the creation of Adam and what God did after he formed Adam’s body from the dust. I jumped up waving my hand like a mad man. Mrs. Brooks looked at me smiling. I was so excited that I said God blew air in Adam’s nose and then I calmed down and said God breathed the breath of life into Adam.”
Connie chuckled and gave Jake a kiss. “Yes honey that’s true, but do you remember the story she told about Timmy, her grandson, and the question he asked her?
Jake threw back his head and laughed. “Honey how could I ever forget that question and what followed. The whole class laughed until Mrs. Brooks cleared her throat quite loudly and called the class to order. If I remember correctly he asked her where air came from and she told Timmy God created the air we breathe.”
Connie hugged Jake. “Yes and she said Timmy looked at her all wide eyed and said. ‘Gee, Grandma so I guess we breathe God’s breath when we take in air.’ That little statement from her 10 year old grandson made me realize just how great and omnipotent God is and that statement has stuck with me as well and when I think of it I praise God.”
Jake grinned from ear to ear with a twinkle in his eyes. “Honey, the church still has all that in storage. We’ll replace the felt and teach our class like Mrs. Brooks did. I think we are well qualified as far as loving children since we have four of our own. We have plenty of time to prepare the room before tomorrow and we can visit Mrs. Brooks and tell her the news. Everybody loves her and she has touched so many lives. Honey, let’s pray. ‘Lord, help, guide, give us wisdom and patience as we teach the children about how You breathed and spoke the universe into existence. We ask this in Christ’s precious name. Amen.’
