God you would not believe the morning I’m having! I mean what a way to start with Rachel handing Jamie to me just in time for the little so-and-so to puke up all over the front of my suit. Then by the time I’ve handed him back, managed a complete change of clothes and headed for the door, I’m shouting, Rachel’s yelling back at me and Jamie’s screaming his head off.
“… and out.”
“In…”
Then that blasted Tonka toy of a car of hers won’t start after I manage to flood the engine. I can’t take the Volvo because it has the child seat in it, so I waste another five minutes waiting for the blasted carburettor to clear enough that I can coax it, stuttering and spitting, into life.
“… and out.”
“In…”
Now every single light between home and the office seems to be turning red on me. And then there was that stupid jerk running a light and nearly slamming into the side of me; then he has the unmitigated gall to yell at me as though it was my fault!
“… and out.”
“In…”
Now I’m going to be fifteen minutes late and I’ll bet that self-important, micro managing, half-baked excuse for a human being, Frank Meecham, will be waiting by my cubical, tapping his feet and glaring at his watch when I turn up. I mean where the h...! I mean where was he at seven-thirty last night when I left the office? It’s not as if I’m not putting the hours in is it?
“… and out.”
“In…”
And once he’s wasted another ten minutes of my morning with his self-righteous drivel about punctuality, I’ll then have to deal with all the other inhabitants of the cube farm doing their meerkat impressions and throwing their snide little comments at me.
“… and out.”
“In…”
And then there’ll be Robert. I mean I know he’s going through a rough time at the moment with his daughter in rehab and everything, but why does he have to keep unloading his problems on me? I mean it’s not as if I don’t have problems of my own; the major one at the moment being that report I need to get finished for tomorrow’s meeting.
“… and out.”
“In…”
But… how would I feel if, in a few years’ time, it were Jamie who was struggling with an addiction? Wouldn’t I appreciate having an ear to pour out my troubles to? Maybe I’ll suggest we go out and grab lunch together somewhere. There’s that café just across the road from the office; it has a few quiet tables at the back…
“… and out.”
“In…”
And Frank’s only trying to do his job, and to be fair on the guy I am late today so he has a right to pop off at me. As for the others, they’re just relieved that someone else is on his radar instead of them.
“… and out.”
“In…”
This traffic isn’t getting any better. Go on, you’ll be waiting forever unless someone lets you in. What’s one car length more or less to me?
“… and out.”
“In…”
And I don’t begrudge Rachel the use of the Volvo today. She has a ton of stuff to get down to the church for that fundraiser supporting that AIDS hospital in Tanzania; and Jamie chucking up down my front was just bad timing. OK, phone the florist and have a big bunch of flowers delivered later this morning.
“… and out.”
“In…”
No better still, make it a small bunch of flowers and a big donation to the fundraiser. She’ll appreciate that more and it’ll be better use of the money.
“… and out.”
“In…”
…
“… and out.”
