A fragrance filled the desert air—
The smoke from sacrificial lambs
Offered up for the sins of man—
It signified God’s future plan.
It wafted through each dwelling place,
Reminding them of law and grace;
None could escape its testament
To God’s abiding covenant—
One day a Saviour would be sent.
Each morn and evening offering,
Before God’s throne a fragrant thing—
A covering for sinful deeds;
Though ash-heaps mount with death’s proceeds
The grace of God by far exceeds.
When Israel settled in the land
They built a temple, lofty, grand;
Yet still the smell of sacrifice—
The only thing that would suffice
Until the coming of the Christ.
The magnitude of sin is stressed
Which flowing blood could not redress;
The gulf twixt man and God portrayed—
A holy life’s no masquerade—
His word and law must be obeyed.
A rising stench of mounting sin!—
Behold the Lamb of God with men!
Lord Jesus Christ through virgin birth
Had come to save all souls on earth
By sacrifice of priceless worth.
The blood of bulls, of goats and rams
Covered sin ‘till the perfect Lamb;
His once shed blood for sin atones
For all who make His death their own—
They’ll cast their crowns before His throne.
These are the fragrance now of Christ,
Of death to death and life to life—
Their lives a living offering,
Mouths filled with praise and thanksgiving—
Sweet incense rising to their King.
