You wiggled as you struggled to make sense of what was unfamiliar and your eyes squinted under the glare of the hospital lights.
I had to wonder: who was going to make Jesus familiar to you and teach you to squint under the aura of his Holiness?
The room was trimmed and polished, effectively sheltering you from the real dangers that waited just outside the doors. You were unconcerned with such things. Mommy’s milk is all you sought and the beating of her heart provided the security you needed.
Who, I ask, will teach you to hide from harm under the shadow of the Almighty and rest in the thump of His royal heart. Who will open the Bread of Life and teach you to drink from The Master's milk?
I first wakened to a different world than you will come to know. God was feared, the Word was honored and Christians were respected. Our schools taught us that right was right and wrong was wrong. You will likely hear no such things.
Who in your life will stand for righteousness and erase the gray area of deceit, while leading you into all Truth?
Christ is mocked, purity reviled, and the Cross of Jesus is scorned. Sadly, often from inside the church. From where will the example of Godliness and the esteem for the true Gospel message come?
Where will you learn that it’s not all about you? Who will teach you that what the Bright and Morning Star thinks far outweighs the fleeting wisdom of the top NBA player? How will you know that the blathering of the next top pop artist is nothing short of foolishness?
I watch you scurry across the floor like a mini-man on a mission, your tiny hands grasping everything but what is allowed. Then it’s into your mouth with all you touch, it’s a God-given instinct.
I have to ask; who will teach you that not all that tempts you in your life will be good or to swallow every fleeting fad that the church world offers. Run from the world, this you must do, but don’t accept everything that comes from the pulpit either. You must know God and His Word for yourself.
Who will train you with every ounce of parental energy? Who will cry over your hurts and laugh with you when you succeed? Who will lay awake at night pleading before the throne for your safety and spiritual salavation?
Your mother. She is up to the task.
Where will you learn to thank God every day for the amazing mom that He has given you? Who will train you to respect and honor her as you should?
How will you know to reverence the father that walked out of your home even before your first breath? Who will teach you to love him and not hate?
Much too soon your little feet will carry you to places with lightning speed. More things to get into, more trouble to find.
Scarcely a day or two will pass and a bicycle will be your transport of choice, then barely a week later it will be a car.
Right now, your eyes search ours with wonder and you hang on every word. By then, you will likely seek your advice elsewhere.
Who will teach you the true knowledge that comes from knowing Jesus and the wisdom that only the Holy Spirit brings? Who will remind you that your mother is still the greatest woman in your life?
Who will stand in the gap?
I am your Grandpa and as long as God gives me breath, you will never forget.
