For weeks we would make home made valentines for all our friends, signing them, “From Guess Who.” It was a tradition in the little town I grew up in. Everybody knew everybody, but this was a rare time when you had a chance at anonymity. It was such fun, in a love thy neighbor kind of way.
On a usually crisp, cold eve of February 14th, my cousin and I would gather our work in large, brown paper bags and walk through the neighborhood to deliver our home made gifts. We couldn't wait to get back to see how many had been delivered to us while we were out. We were never disappointed.
Does anyone make Valentines anymore? Sadly, the tradition of delivering them door to door no longer takes place in our little town. Once lost, a tradition is difficult to revive.
This past February I received an envelope in the mail. It traveled a long way to get here. Inside was a large red heart, carefully cut out with a pair of child proof scissors. The tops were a little squared off, more than rounded. Crayoned in blue, by the unsteady hand of a four year old, was the word NaNny. On the back, in the same blue crayon, were the words, LovE Dylan.
As I glance over the top of my computer, I see my valentine, in the pretty wooden frame I picked out for its new home. I didn't want to put it away in a box. I wanted to see my valentine all year long and feel the love that went into having it hand made especially for me. There it sits, on my treasures table.
A few years from now, I can picture my grandson visiting and saying “Nan, who made that valentine for you?” I will probably answer him by saying, "Guess who?"
