Those who believe in Jesus must meet in secret places
My mistress, Mary, lets them come and meet here, in her home
She scorned the law that said no Christians could exist, in Rome
And so, they come and gather here; to talk and sing and pray
Although the penalty was death, they cannot stay away
For we believe in Jesus’ Name; and for His Sake we’d die
His grace sufficient for a king – or servant, such as I
As shadows darkly gathered, they come up Mary’s path
They travel ‘neath the cloak of night to hide from Herod’s wrath
Last night their hearts were troubled; dear John had just been slain
And now our brave “big fisherman” was bound by prison’s chain
They prayed and asked Jehovah to free him from that jail
Their faith was strong; they knew God’s pow’r would never, never fail
And yet when I heard Peter’s voice come from the gate nearby
None would believe that message, from a servant such as I
I tried to say I’d seen him; I knew I’d heard him there
But they just shook their heads at me, and offered up their prayer
“Please free him, Lord,” they clamored; they told me that I’d dreamed
And when I kept insisting, they wondered if it seemed
That I, mayhap, had seen his ghost; perhaps he, too was dead
I knew no words would be believed; I brought him there, instead
And oh, what great rejoicing, when they saw him standing by
And finally they listened, to a servant such as I
They listened as he told them of how an angel came
Into the darkened prison and loosened all his chains
Of how that angel led him out to the city gate
And now he’d come to tell our group about his blessed fate
Oh, how our hearts were heartened; oh, how our souls were cheered
To think that God had freed him; instead of what we’d feared
I joined in their excitement; we felt God’s Spirit nigh
For surely He had blessed us - e’en a servant, such as I
And yet, I have to wonder; why did they doubt my word?
Why did they think that his release would be a thing absurd?
We’d asked the Lord sincerely; we spoke of His great might
And yet, when I brought them good news their faces still held fright
If Jesus Christ did conquer death, as we so often sing
Then why do we so often doubt He can do anything?
I only know He’s changed my life. I know He hears our cry
He answers prayers and He can use a servant, such as I
God could have chosen anyone to bring that news, tonight
Yet he chose me: a servant girl, to share that wondrous sight:
There Peter stood, a prisoner freed; a answer to our plea
While all of those in Mary’s house still prayed, on bended knee
How many of us pray for things and don’t believe He might
Bring forth the answer to our prayer, as God has done tonight
Remember then, my story; when you seek His reply
He’ll answer you as He did me: a servant, such as I
