The Mayflower carried Protestants in search of liberation
Godly men and women, who, without the king’s approval
Sought out a land, to start again, in spiritual renewal
We fought for rights, self-evident, endowed by our creator
To break away from tyranny imposed by a dictator
The grievances of colonists were met with disapproval
‘Twas no surprise, for George was known for being quite obtusal
The father of our country, a man of moral stance
Set forth a course of government by the hand of Providence
Life, liberty and happiness – we’d stand no more refusal
We’d had enough of insults, regal bluster and flapdoodle.
With thirteen states, and more to come, we forged a strong republic,
Our struggle was intense, but we prevailed to rise above it
Expansion, trade and bitter war increased our sovereignty
And brought us ever closer to our manifest destiny
We made mistakes along the way, a burden all must bear
The rights of men we coveted, we were not quick to share
The Trail of Tears, Abe Lincoln’s death, Dred Scott, the Civil War
The hand of God, we needed, like we never had before
But Faithful is our God, He blessed ideas and innovation
By leaps and bounds we grew into a most industrious nation
And paved the way for progress, both for us and our descendants
Although we drifted far from God in prideful independence
Often times the nation slept, and oft we were awakened
Whitfield, Edwards, Moody and the like stirred congregations
Back to holiness, and righteousness, and moral introspection
Holy beacons, sent to lead our country in the right direction
The twenties were ‘a roarin’, bacchanalia our obsession
Within ten years we fell, financially, into depression
The clarion call rang out against our arrogance and hubris
Professing to be wise, we found, without God we were clueless
Then Delano popped on the scene, a brand New Deal he gave us
He taught a new dependence – why, our government will save us!
He helped the poor by giving them the whole kit and caboodle
You might agree, but as for me, I think we were bamboozled
Free love and sex (though never free) were hallmarks of the sixties
With psychedelic, flower children (better known as hippies)
They practiced peace and happiness, but trouble was a brewin’
Indulgence and intemperance would lead us all to ruin
“God is dead,” the critics said, a country in confusion
Sex and drugs and rock and roll were never a solution
Singing prophets spoke to untold masses who were seeking
But morality was not among the topics they were preaching
The sins our fathers practiced soon came back to haunt our nation
As men judged men unworthy and we practiced segregation
We pushed God from our schools and practiced lifestyles we called gay
Secularism had become the worship of the day
And now we live in such an age replete with information
But what we’re lacking is a healthy dose of impartation
The internet has opened up the world for our perusal
But knowledge without wisdom is a knowledge that is futile
Our morals and our standards are completely upside down
Right is wrong and wrong is right, and P.C. wears a crown
Our leadership’s confounded, giving rise to trepidation
We pray that they might lead us to a holy destination
And now it's time for action, not for sitting on the fence
For leadership, who'll bring our country back to prominence
I ask you to consider this befuddling delegation -
For whom do you pray, ferhoodle you trust, to lead our sovereign nation?
