One morning Ron was playing Auntie’s yard when she called, “Ron, I need you”.
Ron naturally came running. “I need you to go up to the farm and get some eggs from Mother Williams”. she told Ron. “I would drive and get them, but I have food cooking and the washer running”>
Ron was happy to be needed and he was also bored. “Auntie, can I ride my bike”?
“Yes, if you promise to be very careful and stay to the far left of the ‘highway-shoulder’ and only ride facing the traffic. Be very careful not to loose control of the bike on the gravel”. She cautioned.
“I’ll phone to be sure Mother Williams is home”. She said. She did phone and Mother Williams was home.
Ron was soon pushing his bike across the busy highway and then peddling up hill to Mother Williams’. It’s a little over a mile to the farm, but Ron was soon there. He checked the traffic and quickly pushed his bike across the highway, because the farm and Jane’s house are on the same side of the highway.
It’s a very hot day and Ron is naturally hot. Mother Williams is waiting and the two of them are soon sitting on the porch drinking Kool-Aid.
“I would like for you to stay with me for a while, but Auntie said she needs the eggs as soon as possible”. She tells Ron
Mother Williams soon hands Ron a paper sack with several eggs. “Remember you have eggs in the sack”. She laughs.
Ron wraps the top of the sack over his handle bar and rides across the large front yard to the highway. He then, more slowly than usual, begins peddling down hill towards Auntie’s house. The gravel shoulder is OK for biking, but it is somewhat rough.
About half way to Auntie’s Ron hears a strange sound. It’s like a ‘thump’. He slows and looks, but seen nothing unusual. He continues and again he hears the noise. This time he stops to see if an egg has fallen out of the sack. He sees nothing and the sack looks normal.
Ron begins peddling and sure enough he again hears a little ‘thut’. He glances at the sack and all seems to be alright.
As he nears Auntie’s he hears a series of ‘thut’ thut’ thuts’. This time poor Ron is in near shock. He sees that three eggs have fallen on the gravel. He quickly stops to check the sack. The entire bottom of the paper sack is wet and torn…and it is empty.
Ron knows he has some explaining to do. As he rides to Auntie’s back-door he begins yelling, “Auntie, Auntie, I’ve had an accident”.
Auntie comes running. “Ron, what’s wrong”? She is yelling.
“I’m OK Auntie, but I lost all of the eggs”. Ron starts to explain.
“Oh, thank goodness you are alright. You still have the sack, so how can you say you lost the eggs.”?
“Oh, Auntie, I don’t know what happened, but all of the eggs fell out of the sack”.
Auntie examines the sack and starts laughing. “Didn’t you see or hear them falling out”? She asks.
“No, not exactly. I thought I heard something strange and checked, but I didn’t see any broken eggs”. Ron explains.
“Ron, this could only happen with you. I should write a book someday just about you”. She laughs and gives him a big hug. “I still need eggs, so you come into the kitchen and get some juice and go back to the farm and try again. This time I’ll give you a cloth sack with an egg box in it”.
In minutes Ron is again pushing his bike across the highway and peddling to the farm. Mother Williams is waiting with more Kool Aid. “Ron, let’s sit under the tree for a few minutes before you go to Auntie”. She suggests.
Ron and Mother Williams sit and enjoy some cookies and Kool Aid. Ron has cooled down and is soon peddling off to Auntie. This time all goes well.
