“In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away.” Mark 4:16,17 - NASB
The church today has in large part abandoned the teaching of the Ten Commandments leaving congregations void of the knowledge of sin. The Law tramples self-righteousness for if one has offended in the least of these, he is guilty of all (James 2:10). It closes every mouth leaving no justification for the self-proclaimed ‘good’ person (Romans 3:19). “The Law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul (Psalm 19:7).”
The warning of the judgment to come has been replaced by a ‘feel-good’ gospel promising happiness in our present lives. This doctrine contradicts the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ who promised that those who follow Him would suffer trials, temptations, and persecutions.
Experimental Christianity has invaded our churches. In a quest to ‘try’ Jesus many come to the altar sincerely looking for an improved life. They receive the word with joy but having no root of contrition in their hearts, their ‘religion’ is cast aside when tribulation arrives. The false convert is left disillusioned and bitter.
Those convinced of their guilt, knowing they must stand before a just God, appreciate the grace offered by Jesus Christ. Grasping the enormity of the debt they owe, the preaching of the cross will no longer be foolishness to them. Laying down their lives in gratitude, they will continue in His Word thereby proving their salvation (John 8:31). The believer has no reason to reject the Savior in times of persecution but instead draws closer in a loving relationship with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ in whom he places his hope.
