HO HO Trees
By Brenda Blakely
Forgetting how to laugh was the first symptom of the disease, which had crept through out her being. She no longer cried, shouted excitedly, or went about anything with unbridled passion. She was slowly dying inside.
The worst thing about it was, no one seemed to notice that she was slipping away emotion by emotion. The droop in her face had begun with the turned down corners of her mouth. Downcast eyes soon followed.
The day was quite ordinary, with work continuing as usual. Sitting in her chair, just after lunch, letting the food settle, she turned to glance out the window. The trees lined up/down the driveway caught her gaze.
Suddenly deep down inside a little chuckle began to form; you could see it start to jiggle her just-a-little. The jiggle grew bigger and bigger until a full-blown laugh emerged from her mouth. Contagious laughter surged through the office.
But no one knew what the laughter was about.
After the laughter had rolled around the office and they all began to settle back in their chairs and wonder what had happened. She stood up and pointed outside.
The Bradford pear trees lined up/down the driveway were jolly-shaking, emulating HO HO HO; like Santa’s stomach when he hears a precious child,
She has been seized and released into laughter by the subtle movement of God’s hand gently rustling through the “HO HO” trees.
