I think I've painted a better picture of John the
Baptist. I'll let you decide.
The point behind this is we all have a purpose
in life.
John was not your average kid. Always the outsider type. He was voted least likely to succeed. Some of his habits just left him with a certain label. Eating locusts, wearing animal skin and staying alone in the desert. John always knew he was intended for great things. The Holy Spirit had spoken it to him at a young age.
He was like the people you see screaming the end is near and just keep going. His message was different though. He screamed about the Messiah coming and preparing the way. Something about this message got everyone's attention. Crowds gathered and even the local Sanhedrin. They were there keeping watch, making sure no one did anything sinful like get become followers.
One day his life changed forever. He didn't know the Messiah he had been screaming about was among the listeners. Next thing John knew, he was baptizing the Son of God. People gathered to hear what John taught. Many were amazed and others shocked at his claims of a coming Messiah who would save the world. Many people were converted and baptized. What really put John's words over the top of believability is seeing the Holy Spirit descend as a dove. Hearing the voice of God declare Jesus to be His son. Can you imagine such a thing?
John wasn't just responsible for His baptism however, for starting Him on his mission to save the world. John always knew what his real purpose in life was. Prepare the world for the coming of the Lord. We can only imagine what an awesome responsibility this was.
Likewise we are called to do great things for God. It doesn't matter where we come from. We may not be viewed as much by the world however, God sees us as modern day John The Baptists. We are called to prepare the way for the Lord and call people to repentence and a life of total commitment to God. When we realize this, we won't just speak the words of God. We will scream them.
