Grandma
I lay in the warm safety of your Lap
Cosy and cuddled with love
You smelt of lavender
Your chin tickly
When you kissed me
Skin wrinkled
Your powdered smiling face
Kind grey eyes
White wispy hair
My Grandma
I sat on a little chair at your feet
Concentrating so hard
Watching your knarled fingers
Round and round the bush
And down the rabbit hole
Showing me, Slowly
Patiently again and again
Your large hands guided my small ones
Helping me to learn
Showing me the way
Until proudly
I could tie up the laces on my big girl
Shoes
All.. on.. my.. own
I tapped excitedly at the front door
Christmas anticipation
You scooped my up and gave me a big hug
Whispered in my ear
I ran to the spare room You hobbled slowly after me
On the bed was a present
A ragdoll you had created with patient stitches
Struggling with your stiff fingers
Blue striped cotton
Embroidered mouth and eyes
A special present for
A special little girl
You didn’t forget me when I was older
Sent me letters at boarding school
Old fashioned spidery writing
Paper smelling of your lavender
Letters written with patience and care
Words of encouragement
Bible verses and prayers
To guide me and show me
Someone who really cared
Still later when I was in hospital
A frightened eleven year old
Uprooted from school life
Abandoned in a cold bare room
Left alone at the end of the ward
Like an unwanted package
You remembered me
Sent me a special friend
A furry white dog
Blue glass eyes
Little black nose
And in the night
When all was quiet and no one came
I could bury my face in his fur
Put my ear on his tummy
And dream of being set free.
In my teenage years
I sometimes thought of you
I thought of you looking down on me
And your advice and guidance leading me
I felt again your love surrounding me
And warm feeling filled me
My grandma
