This story is about a woman not wanting to stay in a ground blind until dark. Now this may sound trivial to you, compared to your life. This is my story.
First of all, I must describe a ground blind. A ground blind is a structure being plastic, wood, or cloth that sits directly on the ground. It has an entrance and several openings to see out of and shoot out of. If it is shaped out of cloth, the cloth can be wrapped around several trees to shape the blind. A folding chair is placed in the center of the blind for comfort. Ha! Ha! Not really. The main thing about a ground blind is it is not up in a tree or up on stilts. Ground level with whatever comes your way.
There is something about sitting in a ground blind that brings out the fear in me. Fear that began in my childhood and has followed me into adulthood. I do pretty well during the daylight hours. As the sun begins to go down, up rises my fear.
We all begin our lives incased in a dark place
(inside our mother’s womb), but this is a safe place, we are protected there. When we enter into this world, we enter into a place of fear. Life and it’s events will either feed our fears or help us grow stronger in our fears. We have to come to the point in our lives where we trust in the one who is with us in the dark. Scripture says, ”He will never leave or forsake you.”
So here I sit in this ground blind with the reality of the fading sun becoming oh so real. So I began to talk to myself, “you can do this, just calm down, take a few deep breaths.” “Breath girl, breath.
Now time birthed a game in my mind. One where you name the people in the bible in alphabetical Cain was C, going through the whole alphabet using just one name for each letter. I was on my fourth set of names when something caught my attention.
A small pole like object began to rake at the pine straw. It was pulling it back behind a pine tree. For a moment, I was stumped as to what it was. Then like someone pulled the light cord, the light came on. This is a deer leg , dummy. It was raking the pine straw, looking for kernels of corn.
About the second swipe, the deer hunting game was on again, in full force. Slowly picking up my rifle, and resting it on the ledge of the opening. I zoomed in on the pine tree, because the deer was hidden by the tree. Patiently, I waited for the deer to step out from behind the tree.
It is getting darker and darker as I wait for this deer to move out into the lane. I of course, am oblivious to the dark clock ticking away.
Slowly the deer moves out into my lane. It’s head was down munching on the few kernels of corn. It’s right shoulder was full exposed. I squeezed the trigger and harvested the deer.
I waited the allotted time to make sure I had made a good shot. By now, it was dusk dark. When I shot my hunting buddies came and helped me load it g enough to harvest a deer.
Now the question is will I stay in a ground blind again until dark. Only time will tell.
I truly believe that as my walk with the Lord grows, so will my strength grow to endure the fear. Maybe not just endure it but get past it.
