Did you know that God delights in you? Yes, God loves you. But have you considered that the Sovereign God actually delights in you? King David records this thought in Psalm 18:19: "...He rescued me, because He delighted in me." There is something soothing about the thought. It inspires confidence. However, this kind of faith takes a willingness to train the eyes to see the unseen force of God which moves all invisible events in our lives.
Too often it is hard to "feel" that God delights in us. How often when we pray about something critical in our lives our prayers seem to bounce against tightly closed doors of heaven. Those are the times when we find it hard to feel that God is taking much delight in us. If He were delighting in us then would He not be responding to us? Or when the searchlight of God's Word traces it illuminating beam through our inner most being in our moments alone with God; we will wonder what God sees in there in which to delight. There is so much sin that runs recklessly in our souls. How often has the thought occurred to us: "Why would God go to the trouble of rescuing us, if He, as our Creator does not find delight in His creation of us. I certainly would not rescue something or someone who I did not care about." But for God it is not just a caring attitude toward us but a high degree of pleasure and enjoyment; His delighting in us. Why does God delight in us? That is an unanswerable question that even the angels cannot resolve. What is answerable is worth meditating on. This un-warranted outpouring of love from God is the grace that Jesus brings to us.
The delight that God exhibits in our lives needs a response; it is a two-way street. God delights in what He creates. But He is delighted even more when His created ones by their attitudes delight in Him. When we delight in God's way; when we are willing to make His ways our ways, then God is able to establish our steps firmly [Psa 37:23]. And why would He want to establish our feet on solid ground? God puts us in the places where we are (work, community & family) to do justice and righteousness [1Ki 10:9]. We owe our standing in salvation because God delighted in His Faithful Servant and our great Redeemer. Jesus attitude was the same as King David's when his son Absalom conspired to take over the throne. As Absalom deceptively drew away the hearts of the people, David had to flee the royal city into the wilderness for safety. David's attitude was if God showed favor on him then he would eventually be returned to his rightful place on the throne. But even if God were to say: "I have no delight in you David" he would respond with "Here I am. You can do what seem good to You." Now that is a level of trust that delights to do whatever God wants regardless of the outcome. When our hearts are resting in a place of unqualified trust, we are truly delighting in God. "The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in His ways."
