Hell
People seem obsessed with the subject of hell. Ironically, however, the more the word hell shows up in casual conversation, the less it is actually thought about. In truth people do not understand the terror of hell. We, as Christians, are not doing the world a favor by remaining silent about the subject. Jesus Christ spoke of hell repeatedly, declaring that those who go to hell enter into a terrifying place.
In the New Testament hell is described as;
-A place where an undying worm everlastingly consumes an un-consumable body: “where the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched” Mark 9:48. Some scholars have referred to this as the worm of a guilty conscience that unceasingly torments the soul with conviction of utter sinfulness and deserved punishment even as one is reminded of the fact that they can never escape their situation.
-A place of eternal deprivation of rest: “The smoke of their torment rises forever and ever, and they will have no relief day or night.” Revelation 14:11 Unceasing, unabated torment that will not kill but will not be diminished!
-A place of eternal darkness: “But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness.” Matthew 8:12 What is described here is a place of ‘utter’ darkness representing deep misery!
-A place of great anguish: “and they will throw them into the furnace and burn them. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 13:42 A biting lament and anguish are the hallmarks of hell!
-A place of everlasting punishment: “Then they will go away to eternal punishment” Matthew 25:46 We might think of this as an eternal death sentence with no possibility of parole!
-A place of everlasting fire suited for Satan and his hordes: “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Matthew 25:41 Any place that is suited for Satan is a place to avoid at all costs!
-A furnace of fire: “..and throw them into the fiery furnace.” Matthew 13:50 Hell is referred to as fire because of it’s tormenting qualities. Here it is said to be a furnace to signify it’s all-encompassing quality!
-A lake of fire: “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:15 In this verse it is said to be a lake, probably to indicate it’s depth!
-A place of fire and brimstone: “He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.” Revelation 14:10 Brimstone is representative of God’s severe judgment upon perversity. It is used to describe the judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah!
-A place of unquenchable fire: “He is ready to separate the chaff from the grain with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, storing the grain in his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire.” Matthew 3:12 The term unquenchable is asbestos in Greek. This signifies a fire that torments without burning out or annihilating it’s victim!
Sadly there will be no dialing ‘911’ for those who go to this awful place. No reprieve or rescue, ever! There are some who will tell you that if there really is a heaven and hell they would rather go to the place below because that’s where their friends will be. Others say that heaven and God and eternal goodness sound boring but hell, the place of “bad” people, seems exciting. Then there are always the fools who will try to simply deny the existence of hell. This demonstrates the full extent of spiritual delusion that people operate under. Some people are either counting on God being too loving to send them to hell or they are assuming that they aren’t bad enough to merit such punishment. Whatever they imagine, many, many people have chosen not to worry about the future. They will discover that their apathy and misplaced optimism are fatal.
The discussion of this awful subject may, we pray, be for the awakening of unconverted persons to a conviction of their danger. Hell is certain for everyone who is outside of Christ, regardless of any other factor. Hell stands open for all unrepentant sinners and you have nothing to prevent you from being cast into it, right this moment, except the grace of the Lord Jesus. If you haven’t repented of your sin and believed on the Lord Jesus Christ you are on the path directly to hell. You can be a moral person or a religious person or whatever else you imagine to be pleasing to God. You will end up in eternal damnation unless you come to Christ!
