Holidays
Today I watched the flag unfurl
And flutter in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I thought of many men like him
Who've fallen through the years;
And died alone on foreign soil
Far from their mothers' tears.
How many pilots' fell to earth?
And how many ships went down?
How many foxholes became a grave?
And oh how many, never found?
Whenever I hear the sound of "Taps"
I feel a sudden chill;
A haunting echo fills the air
And the night turns deathly still.
That mournful tune the bugler plays
Informs us of the end;
For beneath that flag draped coffin
Lies our brother, son or friend.
I think of all the children
The mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I think about those heroes
At the bottom of the sea,
And those interred at Arlington;
For freedom is not free!
One day the world will be at peace
No graves, no death, no war.
When Jesus comes to take us home
Then "Taps" will play no more.

Like the touch of a nurse to a dying Marine. No promises. Just pure admiration for a job well done.
ALL servicemen should feel what I feel when I read this piece, just ONCE before they go. It would make the crossing easier.
