I once went to a seers meeting. Now these people are way different from prophets – oh boy! WAY! I was going on a missions road trip and they were telling me what God was going to do through me. Some started laughing and most smiled as they said that I would have joy amongst some other words that I forgot.
That didn’t move me much. I’ve had my laughing episodes two or three times in my life. So, I figured it would be one big explosion and that was it. The funny thing about it all was there was a conference that I was going to miss while out of town called God’s Going to Make You Laugh. I was intrigued about it but I had to go on this trip and miss it.
So, I went on this mission trip which was fun, annoying, exciting, and draining. You got eight people in a van traveling to a city with principalities that knew we were there for real Kingdom business. This makes for interesting times.
The last day there someone said the words: God is still on the throne. Something hit me and I’m not sure where in my body but the next thing I knew I was laughing. Maybe a better description would be that I was shaking.
There wasn’t a lot of sound coming from my mouth. I’m kind of jealous of other people who laugh at church meetings because their laugh is beautiful to hear. It’s robust and full- bodied like a great cup of tea. Mine is just heaving or some kind of whistle comes out of my mouth as if I am a tea pot.
There’s no dignity in my laugh. Nobody would admire my laugh. Of course, they would want my joy but not my laugh. This makes it a little baffling.
One thing is for sure. Joy is not something you can analyze. You can’t make sense of it. There’s no logic in it. There’s no strategy to it. It’s just there and what sparks it only Heaven knows. I typically don’t laugh at super funny things; Mainly, at barely funny things when the joy hits.
It makes me a little embarrassed because if feels a lot like getting drunk and that means I am out of control. Other people may dance around when they get the joy but I feel like I may turn into an amoeba. I’m kind of concerned about slipping out of my chair. This happens to me almost daily.
I once was at a church service and I made the mistake of sitting in the second row. That will never happen again. Some lady hit a long high note and this little boy looked up from playing with his toys. His jaw was locked in ‘shock and awe’. The next thing I know I am jittering as I sink into my chair. It was a good thing that people were singing loudly otherwise they may have heard me. Only the people in the back row saw the scene I made.
Each time I would gain composure, God would bring that moment of the little boy’s expression to my mind's eye. So I kept on laughing and laughing and laughing. Honestly, it wasn’t that funny but I got struck by the joy of the Lord. It makes things that are almost funny to be infinately funny.
I was listening to some guy talk about going to Heaven and he said that the first thing he felt was an explosion of laughter. He couldn’t do anything except vibrate. He said that was an experience of the Father’s joy and you don’t want to miss it. I can vouch for that.
I’ve seen some things up in Heaven like my living room with a river running through it and all the indescribable décor and even some of the fashion designed up in Heaven. It’s just incomparable. It’s so much better than the stuff we get enthralled with here on Earth. I don’t even care about interior design anymore. I’ll just wait til Heaven.
But every once in a while I get a little taste of Heaven – just a twenty-minute laugh and things look just a little different. The endorphins have been knocked around and some of the things that were so serious just get bumped out of the radar screen for awhile.
Graham Cooke says he experiences the kindness of the Lord every day. I experience the joy of the Lord most every day. So, I am wondering what aspect of Heaven would you like a sip of every day? Love? Joy? Kindness? Light? Glory? Overwhelm?
Go ahead and ask for it. What are you waiting for?
