Palms Of His Hands
“See, I have engraved your name on the palms of my hands…” (Isa 49:16 NLT)
Every so often we may experience an awesome event. One that remains etched in our memories. For example, after several rocky years of marriage, my husband gave me a gold band. A simple ring with profound carving inside that read, “I belong to my beloved and my beloved belongs to me” (Song 6:3). Love’s backbone strengthened that day and our union became fortified like a walled city. However, if tensions increase, we’re tempted to doubt our love for each other. Then sadly, we second-guess God’s love. And obviously, the Israelites did just that while being held captive in Babylon.
Here, the people of Israel felt dejected and sensed that God had forgotten them. Therefore, God asked,“Can a mother forget her nursing baby?” (Isa 49:14-16). Even though a mother may abandon her children (and some have), God is saying that He will always remember them—and, by extension, remember us. He promises to never abandon us as orphans, and that nothing can snatch us from His hands (John 14:18, 10:28). Because we are inscribed on the palms of His hands, we are continuously on His mind and in His sight. Furthermore, in Psalm 139 we learn of God’s presence everywhere at the same time. He knows our future and we cannot be separated from Him.
Not only are our names written in God’s hands, but there are permanent markings in Jesus’ palms as well. Scars that prove sacrificial love for all (John 3:16). His death and resurrection opened the only Way to live with God forever.
Jesus we accept you as Lord and Savior. Thank you for dying that we may live. Amen.
