“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25 KJV
A friend of mine asked for a word study on the verse from Hebrews 7:25, yet I did not really understand how in depth this verse really is. Since I have begun doing word studies, I no longer read through the passage, but carefully examine and consider what each verse and sometimes each word is trying to tell me. In preparing for this word study, I carefully read the previous and following chapters. Last year, I suffered through reading the Babylonian Talmud, so I have an understanding of Paul’s approach to the Hebrew people.
I have a new view on the book of Hebrews, the mind-set of the Jewish people Paul is trying to convince. I see the writing style of Paul being different that his other books, for this book is similar to the interpretations of rabbis and sages. Paul is making the argument for Christ to the Jewish people in a manner that they are accustomed, and applying a technique “Know your audience.”
The start of this chapter Paul is giving his arguments for Jesus being The High Priest by relating him to the order of Melchizedek. As I read through the chapter, I got a sense the Hebrew people could not accept Jesus as the High Priest, for Jesus was not a decendent from the tribe of Levi. This tribe bore the weight of the priesthood and ministered before God. To the contrary, Jesus was from the tribe of Judah from both earthly parents. Paul goes to great lengths trying to convince the Hebrews and lays out the case for Jesus being the High Priest.
Enter the power of this verse and the first Greek word to study, dynamai, which is defined as being able, having power of one’s own ability, being capable. In the Spanish language, the verb is a multi-use verb poder and in Hebrew yakol (Yod-Kap-Lamed); however, in English we require the use of two verbs to convey the meaning.
The translation of the above verbs have the sense of having the power or ability, to be capable, strong or powerful. In the Hebrew definition, Yakol also means to prevail, overcome, to be a victor. I believe the Hebrew language is Divine in nature, with technical word translations, emotional content, letter and number significance. Yakol plays into all of these, as it means being able, to prevail, overcome, to be a victor. The word Yakol is formed from three letters, located in the 10th, 11th and 12th position of the Hebrew Alphabet, and since it contains twenty-two letters, Yakol sits in the middle pointing to the past, present and future.
In summarizing being able in this verse in a spiritual sense, I interpret this phrase demonstrates Jesus as victor, He has overcome, prevailed the world, and is willing, powerful and has the ability to forgive our past, present and future sins. I am mindful to not stretch things, or make things fit; however, the disciples ask Him for the definition of being able.
“Now hearing, the disciples were tremendously astonished, saying, Who, consequently is able to be saved? Now, looking at them Jesus said to them, With men this is impossible, yet with God all is possible.” Matthew 19:25 CLV
All powerful, All knowing, Victorious, Everything is possible for the past, present and future – this is being able! Wow, I did not expect to uncover this small treasure in the start of the verse, and look forward to breaking down the other words Paul used.
