Faith
It was a Friday morning in the spring of 1992; I was 28 years old and out of work again. I had just sold the very last load of firewood I had stockpiled as a source of income for the winter and now that it was gone I was busted. I never saved any money in those days and so I sat wondering what to do next. My pickup was completely worn out from hauling so much firewood that winter and was no longer roadworthy and so I sat and worried. How would I pay my rent and more importantly, how would I eat? I pondered my situation most of the morning and then remembered a verse from the bible, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” Matt.7.7 KJV. I made the decision then to just let go of my worries and pray about it. I got down on my knees and just asked God in all humility to provide what he wanted for my life. I asked him to lead me where he wanted me to go and provide for me from his wealth and love. I got up feeling better and sat quietly to gather my thoughts. An idea came to me to call a construction company I had been laid off from the year before and see if there was any work available. I had started working for them building a new paper mill in Savannah Georgia and had gone to school at night to learn the construction millwright trade but had been laid off when the mill was near completion. I called the home office and while they had no work close to where I lived they referred me to a jobsite needing help two states away in Tennessee. I thought to myself, how can I get to a job in Tennessee? I have no money and no transportation. I picked up the phone and called anyway and was told that a position was open if I could be there Monday morning to go to work. I hesitated for a moment trying to figure out how I could be that far away that quick when the superintendent told me if I was not sure I could be there he would have to hire someone else as he had to have a man on the job for this position Monday morning no doubt about it. Without thinking I told him I would be there Monday morning at 7 am ready to go to work. It was a well paying job and I needed to work. He accepted my word with no more questions and as I hung up the phone I wondered how I would get there in two days time with no money and no vehicle. I sat in amazement that after I had prayed a job had come to me so quickly. I sat outside on the porch and watched the traffic flowing by and tried to think of a way to get to Tennessee by Monday. I occurred to me all at once, if God could find me a job he could provide the way to get there. As simple as it sounds it was not easy for me to come to this conclusion. I watched all the cars and trucks going about their business and then I knew, God owns every single car and truck I see. He owns them all. We are only allowed to borrow them at his convenience and pleasure. I went inside and knelt in prayer and asked God to make the way for me. I asked God to provide me with a vehicle out of his bounty that would be able to make the long trip I had in front of me. If it was his will for me to work in Tennessee then he would have to provide the way to get there. I got up and started packing my clothes and tools with faith in his promise to provide. I knew the bible said to knock and the door will be opened and I had knocked, so I waited for this door to swing wide. I have to admit that thoughts of failure did try to sneak into my mind as I prepared to leave but I pushed them away time and time again. I had finished packing and was sitting on the edge of my bed when my phone rang. Glory to God, it was a fellow who owned a red pickup truck for sale that I had looked at some weeks before. It was a one owner and well cared for and though I wanted it then, I could not afford it. I listened with wonder as the fellow related to me that he felt led to sell me the truck. I told him right away that I had no money and only a promise of a job out of state. With no hesitation he told me to come and get the truck and I could pay for it as I was able. I hung up the phone in complete and total shock. Even though I was waiting in faith for a prayer to be answered I realized when it happened I was unprepared in my mind to accept it. WOW, I had awakened that morning with no job and no way to get around and now only a few hours later I had a job and a truck. I was literally walking on air as I found a way to get across town to pick up my blessing and I praised God continually for his bounty. When I arrived I found that the man had just changed the oil and filled the fuel tank and had already signed the title. He handed it to me and said I could pay for it when I could, by the month or all at once when I could afford it. I shared with him the story of how my day had started and how he had become a part of God’s blessing in my life. We both had tears in our eyes as I drove away. I went straight home and loaded up to leave. I borrowed what money I could from friends and family and found I had just enough to get where I needed to go. I got to Tennessee and worked on that Job for almost a year until it was finished. I saved my money and returned to Georgia 13 months after I had left and proudly paid that kind man in full for the truck and thanked him again for his faith and generosity. I drove that pickup for nearly ten years and never had a flat and was never left stranded on the side of the road due to mechanical problems. I traveled all over the country doing different construction jobs and that truck went everywhere I went. It was truly a blessing from God and proof positive that prayers are answered, just ask and it shall be given to you.
