Leadership
The world we share is not rotating any faster than it ever has and we are not moving around the solar system at any greater speed than before, but our society as a whole is moving faster now than at any time in history. Technology reigns supreme and many consider mankind to be the masters of the universe. Machines have taken the place of millions of workers and in the name of progress we have stripped the land bare, over fished our oceans and exploited humanity for gain. What once took years to accomplish may now take only weeks or in some cases days or hours. This means that more harm can be done now to the environment even faster than ever before. Gone today is the safety net of time. We no longer have the luxury of waiting for someone or something to make our lives better and easier. The future of the entire human race depends on what each one of us is willing to do right now. We live today at the expense of others who have yet to be born and as such they are not able to make the decisions that must be made now nor are they able to voice their opposition to our wanton disregard for their futures. If you are reading this then you are among the top percentile of humanity. It does not matter what position you hold in your community or what your personal net worth might be. Consider these facts; according to the United Nations Development Program fully one quarter of the world’s population (1.3 billion people) live in severe poverty. Nearly 800 million people do not get enough food to eat and some 500 million are chronically malnourished. Even in the industrialized countries more than 100 million people still live below the poverty line with more than 5 million homeless and 37 million without jobs. An estimated 2 million children have died as a result of armed conflict and worldwide 110 million landmines lie undetonated in 68 countries and 1.2 billion people live without access to safe drinking water. Did you know that the net worth of the ten wealthiest billionaires is $133 billion dollars? That is more than 1.5 times the total national incomes of the least developed countries and the cost of eradicating global poverty is only 1% of the global income. If you have the privilege of reading this you truly are among the wealthiest people living on the earth today. We are the ones using our resources for pleasure and gain with little regard for the suffering masses in the rest of the world. Can you imagine for just a moment what it would be like to not have electricity or clean running water? Think about what your life would be like if you had never had these luxuries and then consider the many millions of people have never enjoyed even these simple things much less adequate food and shelter. We have our cars and trucks that allow us easy and comfortable access to our country and we enjoy our boats and other watercraft, airplanes, motorcycles and endless other tools of recreation that use massive amounts of fossil fuels to keep us entertained. Computers, video games, air-conditioning and clean running water are taken largely for granted and viewed as a right rather than a privilege. The technology exists today that would halt our dependence on foreign oil and help stop the endless polluting of our watersheds and oceans, but it is ignored in the name of a strong economy. Our leaders have sold the future of our children to build themselves a power base and to corporate greed instead of the public interest. We use huge amounts of paper products and non recyclable containers that deplete and destroy our environment for future generations. What will we say to those who follow in our path of self indulgent gluttony? How will we look into the eyes of future generations and explain our lack of vision and infinite stupidity? Think of the children who may never see a lion or tiger in the wild, who may never have the chance to visit the beautiful coral reefs and enjoy the fish and wildlife we take for granted today. How will we explain to them what trees were like to climb and clean air was like to breathe? Will they be forced to visit a museum to experience this right of humanity? Which one of us will stand and take responsibility for what we have done? We must stop this behavior now, we must work together to stop it cold and set this earth on a new course that loves life more than carnal pleasures and our environment more than profits. We must stop accepting wealth as the ultimate measure of success and instead recognize those who work for the welfare of others and reward them accordingly. The masses will continue to blame the politicians and corporate leadership and they in turn will continue to blame the masses. I will tell you this, if you are reading this and you choose to do nothing to halt the destruction of the rain forests and the pollution of our oceans, if you will not speak up for those who have no voice and cannot speak for themselves and if you will not even change your own personal habits to help save the world we all share, then it is YOU who are to blame. It is YOU who has the responsibility now to make others aware and to do everything possible to avert this imminent looming disaster. Time is running out and if you honestly believe than one person cannot make a difference in the world thru conviction of purpose and hard work, then explain Mother Theresa and the thousands of others who have given their lives to help strangers, explain the accomplishments of Einstein and Thomas Edison, Marconi and Henry Ford. Help me understand how Alexander the great, Attila the Hun and Hitler were able to change entire civilizations in a few short years. One person can make all the difference in the lives of those around them either for good or for evil; just ask Jesus Christ what self sacrifice can do to heal the world, after all he is the best example we can follow.
