Prayers
Does prayer have anything to do with your well-being?
What is prayer? A petition to God in word or thought, states Merriam-Webster dictionary.
What is well-being? Webster says it is the state of being happy, healthy or prosperous.
Do we pray then to receive the gifts of well-being? Let’s review each gift individually.
Happiness
The first gift of well-being is happiness. Is a proper prayer, "Lord, my main goal is to be happy so please grant me that wish." Is God a genie? Another question is, “What constitutes happiness?”
Christians believe that praying makes you a happier person because it allows for two way communication between you and God. The more you talk to God on a personal level, the more you will come to rely on the best friend you'll ever have. God is with you wherever you go (Matthew 28:20 - “And surely I am with you always.”) Happiness is knowing Jesus and being free. That takes care of the "happy" part.
Do we think that suffering is not part of well-being? The Bible quotes in Romans 5:3-4 "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
Health
Praying makes you healthier because when your mind and emotions are happy and positive, your body follows suit. Release all your troubles to God. Philippians 4:6-7 states "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Regarding health and prayer, does God count up our good deeds and decide that we get a free pass to not having the latest virus? No, in Ephesians 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."
Prosperity
What about prosperity? Is a good prayer, "Please may I have a BMW in place of my beat up Escort," or "Make me rich because I hate my present job." Is a McDonald's food preparer not as "rich" as a CEO of a major corporation?
Praying makes you prosperous through praising God. Are you wealthy because you are a major shareholder of Google stock and live in a mansion? Or are you wealthy because you go home to a loving family and take the time along the way to feel incredibly blessed to hear the doves cooing and the evening sky painted a brilliant orange by the best painter of all? Richness is counting the blessings the Lord has given you and trusting in Him. Proverbs 28:25 states "The greedy stir up conflict, but those who trust in the Lord will prosper."
Conclusion
Maybe the best prayer for our well-being is, "Let Your will be done."
Matthew 6:10
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
