Poetry
A haunting face to look upon
Was the man who taught our class
The faint of heart were all soon gone
While some peered through the glass
The teacher was a troubadour
His spellbinding tales were free
The Bible was the text he took
As he spoke of the Holy Three
A story told to reach our soul
God's Word, the iron truth
Told of treasure sought of old
Sweet to our heart's tooth
His face was warm with eyes of fire
That glittered when he spoke
Of love come down from up above
Till every heart were shook
Bend your ear--there's truth to hear
We could not help but pay him heed
We had no choice but to hear that voice
Trustworthy truth we need
His eyes became a glowing fire
As the story drew us in
And all who heard would soon admire
So with this he did begin
Such splendid rays of glorious hope
The story of God and man
Walking down a grassy slope
In a garden sweet and grand
Such joy had they in fellowship
The one would love and provide
The other love and worship
And together forever abide
The teacher’s brow now wrinkled
Severity in his tone
The awful news that brought the blues
That the man was now alone
Save for the mate who was so great
Who made the man more whole
Until this day that was so gray
When innocence went away
And all would know what ceased to flow
The blessings once enjoyed
No longer walking, man and God
Together, a relationship destroyed
A Holy God could never dwell
With those who have been soiled
Sin and death and darkness came
And for food, the man now toiled
A paradise was lost that day
So dreadful in their course
The man and she were sent away
Filled with deep remorse
The dirt did sprout with weed and thorn
Next dreaded painful morn
Sweat and fears with dirty tears
His face now wrinkles worn
His mate did come to have a son
Who tore Eve's heart in two
When another came with a better name
Who the first son angrily slew
"Halt", sayeth one in the second row
"There's things that we must know"
"Should not the son the second one
Be let within again
The paradise that had been lost?"
And all in class sayeth, Amen!
Seems right, quoth he, but truer still
A curse was wrought that day
All men are given their own free will
And all have gone their own way
No man can merit that paradise lost
Where Adam walked with God
Eternal separation is the cost
Through death we all must trod
Now all in the class were sad
As sad as sad could be
How can we cope without a hope
All voices demanded of he
For dark and dismal is our fate
To always walk alone
Without our God in a wretched bod
And to sin be ever prone
The teachers face now brightened
With a smile in his voice
No frets, said he, quite amiably
For all doth have a choice
Then all grew still to hear God's will
With doom or hope now pending
And so spoke on that learn-ed man
Truth on our ears descending
There is a debt which must be paid
An awful price indeed
The Bible say's, that all have sinned
And a Savior we all need
Death is the payment due the just
But a substitute's been given
Becoming man, yes one as dust
Who died - yet still is living
The plan was made before the earth
God's Son has come through human birth
He set aside His Kingly robe
And walked as us upon this globe
No man hath done what He God's Son
Accomplished righteously
Without one sin, over evil win
Did He, obediently
Silence came in the pause he took
The teller of shining truth
Reading faces for any traces
Of doubt, like a seeking sleuth
Slowly now a hand was raised
A query, through the lips blew
We must know, yet God be praised
How could this one who is God's Son
Be God yet human too?
With glowing face and twinkling eyes
As hundreds of illumined fireflies
He answered with news on which to muse
For teaching was his prize
Mysteries and Miracles
Are many, and I'd have it so
What kind of god would God be
If all could understand and know
Everything that He hath wrought
Almighty in His Holiness
True it is, a leap is needed
Of faith, and faith to see
Within the realm of heart and spirit
Where birth is given to be free
Fleshly eyes and intellect
Are not enough to know
Word and soul must intersect
So spirit eyes can grow
Have now faith, and listen
News, wonderful and rare
Student eyes did glisten
When hearing of God's care
For every man and woman born
Hath love from God descending
Before the first bright rising Morn
Hath been God's love unending
He left His throne to die for us
To pay the debt long due
On a torturous cross to pay sins cost
And give us life anew
A perfect sacrifice was needed
But no man could fill the bill
For as been said--we all are dead
In sin, and sinning still
This be why the incarnation
God and Man in one
In all points tested, no one has bested
The Lamb of God--the Son
Upon the tree of hard misery
He bled and died to set us free
Twas not the nails but twas His love
That held Him there for we
Buried then--for three long days
Not idle was His soul
Gone to preach--dead hearts to reach
Then away did the big stone roll
In Righteous clothes the Son arose
Giving life to all who come
In faith, to Him the Son who won
Eternal life for all who believe
A leaping raging flame
Burned within each chest
Bringing no pain--only joy to gain
With the telling of heavenly rest
Truth burns hot within the heart
When certainty lodges there
For all of our doubt had been cast out
And we all praised God in prayer
Each student to hear it
Twas born of the Spirit
That day by faith in the Word
The name of Jesus
Brought love to please us
Forgiving--our sinfulness cured
Like the bud of a rose each pedal expose
Tender beauty rare
Unfolding to grow in circular row
The Saints now in His care
Tests are given--yes faith is tried
Some suffer long--it's true
But God's Spirit dwells inside
And with peace and joy will comfort you
The teacher sat-the truth now told
As glistening tears down faces rolled
And shining in the light of love
Each heart received the Spirit from above
