TITLE: The Face Looking Back By Robert Ford 05/16/07 |
|
His hair dark, his face round and unblemished.
Having a huge smile and a look so carefree and innocent.
I ask him “Who are you?” A look of curiosity crossed his
Face but he gave no reply.
I began to think about the next time I saw him.
He was a young teen. His face still round and unblemished.
The smile had began to fade and uncertainty was in his eyes.
There was a shy demeanor about him. Again I ask
“Who are you?” There was still a curious look and no reply.
I saw a young man on our next encounter. His face very slim
And having no smile. Vanity and arrogance protruded from
His eyes. I felt reluctant to ask again. Ignoring my feelings I ask
“Who are you?” An egotistical look crossed his face as he
Stared down his nose at me. I got no reply.
I was looking at an older man when I noticed him again.
His hair graying as time and the past was beginning to show.
A slight look of vanity still there. As I looked deeper into his eyes
I saw signs of despair and unhappiness. I ask
“Who are you?” Complete shame crossed his face
As he walked away saying nothing.
I see an older man now when we cross paths.
The look of vanity has turned into defeat. His arrogance
And ego has turned into dissatisfaction. I did not ask this time but with compassion and concern in my voice told him " I have looked in this glass many times over the years. Each time you were there. Several times I ask the same question. At no time have you given a reply. Now with each passing day I will wonder who is the face looking back?
