TITLE: A Family Legacy By Danielle Sweeney 02/12/07 |

In fact, Leigh had a collection of beautifully crocheted pieces herself. Over the years, Leigh’s grandmother had made her several Barbie dresses. She can remember one piece especially well, being that she played with it often as a little girl. It was an exquisite, white, A-line wedding dress with a red ribbon that tied at the waist. She envisioned herself wearing it on her wedding day, walking down the isle with a red bouquet of roses in hand, imagining the look on her soon-to-be husband’s face as he laid his eyes upon her. It was a memory she treasured from her childhood. Due to her unappreciation, however, she never gave much thought to her grandmother's hard work and talented craft.
On one particular visit to her grandmother’s Leigh took special notice to her grandmother crocheting what would one day be a beautiful blanket. The yarn’s color was a dark blue like the ocean on a calm winter morning. She watched her grandmother’s old and weary hands as they moved swiftly in and out of what looked like a bowl of spaghetti, only made up of yarn and not pasta. Her hands were moving so fast that Leigh could hardly make out what was being done with the yarn to create the alluring repetitious pattern that lay in her Grandmother’s lap.
Until now Leigh had not realized how hard her grandmother worked at crafting these beautiful works of art. She began to imagine how much time and effort had gone into all those years of crocheting. Leigh’s grandmother did it all for nothing other than to see the satisfaction on a loved one’s face when they received a gift from her. Her grandmother’s tired hands told the story of a selfless and talented woman who had blessed her loved ones by giving up of herself.
Looking at her grandmother with admiration, Leigh hoped that one day she would be like her grandmother. She awaited the day when her own grandchildren would look upon her and feel the exact same way she felt about her grandmother now. Leigh wanted to pass on the family legacy of a selfless, loving heart. “Grandmom”, she asked eagerly, “would you teach me how to crochet?”
