TITLE: A Few Words About Our Writing Lives By Elizabeth Hale 08/03/06 |
|
This is a good thing. I have noticed, however, that in my desire to commit them to paper before they escape, I am allowing them to intertwine and it makes it so much more difficult to clarify what needs to go where.
Therefore, I realize that I have to make myself step back occasionally, and focus on the other areas of my life. Things like sleep, food, and
exercise get lost in the shuffle. No one can operate to the best of their abilities without these things.
Writing is important to me. It's like eating. I have to do it. I cannot stop it. Whatever else may be going on around me, I am constantly searching for paper and pen, or a computer.
I want to keep my mental focus clear. So, I have to make myself make time for other things. We as writers have to come up for air on occasion. Yet, I don't want to. Writing, while hard work at times, is fun. We enjoy it. What else do you do where you become so totally immersed that hours pass by unnoticed? Why can't all things defined as 'work' be like this?
We need to take breaks. Often. To refresh ourselves. To take care of our physical bodies. To talk to God and connect with our lives and families.
Get up and get moving. Walk around the block. Jog up and down your stairs. Get plenty of sleep, and eat properly. Take your vitamins. Play with your children and grandchildren. And read, read, read. Then read some more.
Just get out of your own head for a while.
