I love to write. I love the physical act of putting pen to paper, or typing feverishly on the keyboard.

I like the way the words just tumble out from somewhere deep inside. Sometimes they make sense (hallelujah!) and other times they don't.

Occasionally, words don't come at all, so I use this time to read what other people have written. Often, I am so inspired by the wonderful work of another person that it gets me moving again.

I think the best advice I ever read on writing is that, unless you are writing a short story, or a book, where lots of words are needed to help your reader convey the scene, the best course of action is to clarify the single thought you are trying to get across, and then get in and get out.

This is difficult. Often, one idea will naturally lead to another, and you find yourself with page after page instead of the simple paragraph you intended.

So, you must go back, pick out the parts related to the one thought of a piece, and save the other stuff for another piece.

Then you have to break it down, read it out loud, and simplify.

We live in a very busy world. Some people only have time to read a very short piece at a sitting. Make it count. Say what you mean, mean what you say, and move on.

Writing can be hard. But the act of it is so
great that it must be done. Some will always do better than others.

You still need to say what you will. No one else can write like you do. No one else can say what you can.


Be inspired by the works of others, not envious.

This helps you grow as a writer, as well as a person.
