TITLE: Creatures By Victoria Wallace 06/08/06 |

What they don’t understand about animals is that it doesn’t matter that they aren’t intelligent; because they are alive. They were there, lying in the brutal crabgrass in the backyard.
We could see them like little limp sparks about to go out. The two naked baby creatures all scratched up, and so young and hairless, my cousins and I didn’t even know what they were. At first I didn’t care but then they sucked me in like a saturated spaghetti noodle; so I agreed to stay up that night and take care of them.
It was unexpected by gratifying that they survived the night, it felt like I had moved a big huge mountain. Over night their scratches closed up and after another “ER” night they were moving towards food when it was brought to them. I fell in love with those creatures; I fell in love with them. I could sometimes feel their hearts beating inside of mine. When I opened their shoebox and they stretched their heads towards me I wished I could spend all my time with them in the bathroom.
On the fifth day I opened their box. They were dead a rekindled flame was now ash.
My cousin made a joke about not burying them too shallow. She just didn’t understand how important they were, she could not see their flames.
