Dark eyes glaring
Tired, alone and sad
Could lead to anything
Usually bad

Why so much hate
For such a small child
Who could not defend
Was meek and mild

A child should feel
The love in a touch
Instead of the fear
He felt so much

Dark eyes glaring
So uncaring they seem
No sign of a smile
No sparkle or gleam

Why such desperation
Why so much pain
Why be so mean
With nothing to gain

Dark eyes glaring
Coming ever near
Speaking words
He doesn’t hear

He saw her arm raise
He saw the fury in her eyes
He wondered if this
Was the time he would die

The belt struck his face
He screamed out in pain
He didn’t know what he did
To make her insane

The screams went unheard
There was no one around
And when it was done
He fell to the ground

Once again………he prayed for help.
