Blanket of Night
by
Karen Heslink
The blanket of night covered me in deep, dark stillness.
As I gazed out into its depth
I came to know the sadness of the generations.
I held it, that darkness, as I sighed
And tried to cross over into sleep.
With tears still wet upon my cheek
I longed for a lost time of light and laughter.
Staring behind closed eyelids, I nodded towards sleep.
The darkness swirled around me
And pulled me farther away.
It led me to a place I longed to go.
A destination achieved
Through the wanting and a dream
Under the blanket of night in deep, dark stillness.
