A Nanny and Two Kids
417 words
On the first day of summer vacation, Gina’s dad led a strange animal down the ramp of the truck. Gina was sure it was a small, cute animal with black and white spots. She was not at all sure what kind of animal it was.
“What is this little animal?” Gina asked her Dad.
“This is a nanny goat – a girl,” he answered.
Gina looked at the animal. “She sure is a fat nanny goat,” she said.
“She is going to have a baby,” Dad said. “It will probably be born soon. It will not be called a baby, though. Baby goats are called kids.”
Gina’s older sister, Tess, came out to see the nanny goat. “When she has her baby, I want it for my own,” she said. “You can have the nanny. Shall we name her Nanny?”
Gina nodded. “I think Nanny is a good name for the nanny goat,” Gina said. “But I would like to have the kid. Or maybe we can share the kid.”
“I am the oldest, so I should get the kid,” said Tess.
“Hold on a minute,” Dad said. “Let’s not argue about who gets the kid and who gets Nanny. We will wait and decide.”
Two weeks later, early on a bright Saturday morning, Dad called the girls. Get up and visit Nanny,” he said.
“Oh no,” Gina said,. “What has happened to Nanny?. Is she all right?”
“She’s fine,” Dad said.
Gina and Tess did not even get dressed. They ran downstairs in robes and slippers.
“Come with me to the barn,” Dad said. “You will not believe this.”
They entered Nanny’s part of the barn. Beside Nanny in a mound of hay were two tiny goats. One was black and white, just like Nanny. The other was a beautiful brown and white.
“Nanny had twins,” Gina said, as she knelt beside the kids. “Now we can each have a kid of our own.”
“I want the black and white one,” said Tess. “She looks just like Nanny.”
“I want the brown and white one,” said Gina. “And I am going to name her Zel. She looks just like Zel from the comic strip.”
“Okay girls, You each will have a kid of your own. That means you have to take care of them,” Dad said. “When they get a little bigger, you will have to feed and water them.”
“Yes Dad,” the girls answered together.
“We will take good care of these twin kids,” Gina promised.
