My left eye is swollen shut.
I can only see through the narrow
Slit of my right eye.
I’m sitting in the corner between
Rounds, drenched in sweat.
My trainer, who is also my father,
Looks at my swollen face and asks me,
“Son, are you still in the fight?”
I nod my head that feels like it’s about to pound
Off my shoulders.
“Yeah, I’m still in the fight.”
I barely hear my voice over the chants of well-wishers.
They have no stake in my outcome
Other than a desire to see a friend
And brother come out of this fight victorious.
I feel cool water being poured over my head.
I feel strong hands massage my shoulders.
Pressure is being applied
To my left eye to stop the bleeding.
The clock is quickly running down.
It’s almost time for the final round.
I hear my father ask me again,
“Son, are you still in the fight?”
I take three deep breaths, inhaling through my mouth.
I look into the face of my father, who believes in me.
He has confidence that I can win this fight.
Even though by all appearances I look beat up,
Yet my heart screams,
“I can win!”
I hear the bell sounding as if it’s far away.
I stand, slap my gloves together,
And look my father in the face.
“I’m still in the fight. I’m going to go knock this devil out!”
I see a smile stretch across my father’s face.
I see a twinkle in his eyes.
He believes in me, and because of
His confidence in me, I believe in myself.
My question to you is this:
Are you still in the fight?
Are you determined to go another round?
