While speaking on the mount Jesus told the people "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to eternal life, and only a few find it. Matthew 7:12
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (King James)
Growing up I often wondered what is the straight and narrow pathway. I was troubled as I read this passage because I believed it was the road of strict behavior which I knew I could not follow. I also wondered how did we walk down that pathway.
I later learned the straight and narrow pathway is the pathway that leads to eternal. Life is a journey through time. Jesus is the shepherd who leads us through life. Jesus said I am the truth, the way and the life, no one comes to the father except he come by me. The pathway is straight and narrow because our eyes must be focused on the shepherd who leads us down the straight and narrow pathway which leads to eternal life. Jesus leads us just as God led the children of Israel. They were safe as long as they followed GOD. They experienced pain and difficulty each time they strayed from the pathway GOD had chosen. What happens along the path way of life?
1. Some sheep take their eyes off of the shepherd. They become lost and struggle to find the way back. They will never find the way back by themselves.
They must bleat like sheep and allow the shepherd to find them. The shepherd seeks lost sheep.
2. Others think they don't need the Jesus to lead them through life to the eternal waters . They believe they can find the eternal water by themselves. They forget that Jesus said I am the truth, the way and the life. No one comes to the father except he come by me.
3. Some begin the journey with Jesus and later decide they don't need Jesus to help them get there
Those sheep who make it to eternal life are the ones who keep their eyes focused on Jesus and allow him to lead them.
Remember
1.Life is a journey through time.
2.Jesus leads us down that straight and narrow pathway as we journey through time.
3.We must be prepared for the challenges we will encounter along the pathway.
