Men should not be asked to clean women’s bathrooms. While putting some things in my locker, I overheard a discussion between a janitor and his supervisor. The janitor had placed a sign on the women’s bathroom door. The sign indicated the bathroom was being cleaned. Although a sign was on the bathroom door, women continued to enter the bathroom. Frustrated, the janitor attempted to enter the bathroom. His supervisor stopped him after telling him it would be sexual harassment for him to enter the bathroom with a female inside.
The next night I observed that same janitor sitting with a frustrated look on his face. I asked him what was wrong. He indicated that he wanted to clean the bathroom, but although a sign was posted on the door women continued to enter the bathroom although the sign said “bathroom closed.”
Once again, the janitor's supervisor told him to keep walking until he located a bathroom which was available for cleaning. He continued to sit there with a frustrated look on his face. The sign on the bathroom door said “bathroom closed”, but women continued to enter the bathroom.
On Friday, I observed a sign which said “bathroom closed” for cleaning. Individuals were asked to use another bathroom. Unlike earlier attempts, the bathroom door was now locked and women were forced to visit another bathroom. Cleaning a bathroom should have been simple. I wonder would it have been the same if a female was attempting to clean a men’s bathroom.
