I only repeated
What someone else told me.
It was just a little
What seemed so true story.
I only wanted to
Pass the news along
So others could pray
How could it be that wrong?
But before I knew it
Sister Ruth was in tears
At the corner store
The tale she overhears.
Too late I discover
That the gossip I heard
Was not the true story
How did it get so blurred?
Now all is in chaos
Over one small untruth.
Can I take back my words
To redeem Sister Ruth?
You can’t put back feathers
In a pillow once torn
You can’t take back gossip
Once the story is born.
You cannot stop a plague
Or unscramble an egg.
