On a road of pain and confusion,
Lost more times than I know,
In a warped, distorted delusion.
I’ve made decisions based on lies,
And for all the wrong reasons,
I’ve rarely seen a summer’s smile,
I’ve lived a life of wintry seasons.
And so as a battered, weary soul,
I came to a halt along the way,
At last I was ready to hear,
Whatever God may have to say.
He didn’t say very much,
Nor did He count the cost,
He just stretched out His arms,
“Sit here, beneath the Cross.”
The sun was high, burning bright,
Scorching the surrounding land,
But I was safely in the shadow,
Of the Cross and outstretched hand.
And as I sat in the protection there,
The Lord played back my life for me,
And the pain and grief so often felt,
Refused to pass beyond this Tree.
The ugliness of all the brazen sin,
Of the way I’ve lived stood out,
And as I wept in shame and grief,
He stretched His arms further out.
The Blood of Christ freely flowed,
Not counting the incredible cost,
As I simply obeyed His simple words,
“Sit here, beneath the Cross”
The Blood flowed like a river,
Washing over all that I could see,
And I realised with intense relief,
That this Blood flowed for me.
No longer do I need to carry,
The burdens I’ve had so long,
And I don’t need to be the same,
Or live the same way, from now on.
I can choose to follow a new road,
That Jesus and I can gladly share,
And the only pain and confusion,
Is what I carry with me there.
For His promises will never fail,
And a little time the only cost,
When I stumble, when I fall,
Return and sit, beneath the Cross.
The journey of life continues,
And sometimes I fall into sin,
But I no longer wallow in it,
Or live a life fit for garbage bin.
And I no longer journey alone,
Failing to see summer days,
For even a deep chilling winter,
Cannot dampen His love’s rays.
And I rejoice that I took time,
On the day of my darkest night,
To pause and listen to His voice,
To be cleansed within His sight.
Now I declare Him Lord of all,
Outstretched arms paid the cost,
As they bade me to come and sit,
In His love, beneath the Cross.
