The Social Media
It’s an intriguing idea, the concept of sitting on your own, sometimes in a room in the corner of your house and using a computer to communicate with the rest of the world!
Isn't it strange how what was once science fiction is now science fact. Forty years ago, if you’d suggested that people will be doing that regularly they would have said you’d been reading too much science fiction!
For me, what’s really strange about it is that we call the process ‘the social media’ when in reality the way we go about it is anything but social!
I mean for it to be ‘social’ we should be in the midst of people and interacting with them on a ‘face to face’ basis shouldn’t we?
Yes, we can sit at our computers and send instant messages that arrive in the other side of the planet in less than half a second. We can even get an almost instantaneous reply, but how can we be sure that we really are talking to the person they claim to be?
I think they must have got the idea from prayer! I mean you can sit (stand or kneel, whatever you like) and send a message to God knowing that it got there so fast it actually arrived before you sent it! Not only that, but the reply is on the way back. You might not like the reply, but it is coming.
I like the movie ‘Bruce Almighty’ where Bruce has had a few days with God’s power and asks God about the constant buzzing, he’s told that it’s the prayers of the people and he’d better get onto answering some of them pr it’ll drive him insane!
The next part of the movie shows the crazy ways Bruce comes up with to answer prayer, until finally he gives up and simply says he’s going to say yes to all of them and 17,000 people win the lottery (just in the Chicago area alone).
I love the social media and the ability it brings for me to talk to my family on the other side of the planet, but more than that I love the fact I have something so much better that allows me to talk directly to the King of Kings and maker of the universe, not only that but I don’t have to wait for an instant message to know I’ve been heard, he already told me that I have been and his reply is on the way.
