TITLE: A Forever Home

This was a personal writing challenge where I had to choose one noun, adjective and verb and write a short story (No more than 300 words) using these words in context. (Noun: Merchant; Adjective: Crippled; Verb: Separating)
Boston, Massachusetts, 1865

The hustle and bustle of the Boston city streets were always something that exhilarated Marcus and made him feel alive. All his life he imagined himself purchasing everything in sight, just to prove that he could. However, as a boy of only twelve years of age and one born into a life of poverty, he knew that was only a dream. Marcus also knew the heartache of being ignored and shunned because he was crippled. His own family had disowned him at the young age of ten. They claimed that he was an unwanted burden to a family that could no longer handle the extra weight of his infirmity. Marcus felt the burden himself and willingly went to the boarding house for abandoned children, separating himself from his family forever, both physically and emotionally.

Marcus shyly approached the first merchant, who happened to be his good friend Wilbur. As he handed Marcus whatever he could afford to part with, a man came walking down the middle of the street. The man paused in front of Marcus and said, “Young man, the Lord told me to come here today and look for a young boy fitting your description… I’d like to give you this book and inside is a special invitation, which I would like you to consider.”

Marcus looked at the book and realized it was a Bible. Quickly, he read the paper inside and realized it was an invitation to be a part of this man’s family. Marcus looked up in amazement. “Young man, the invitation to be a part of my family goes beyond my humble home. It’s an invitation to also be a part of God’s family, as his adopted son. Would you like that?”

Marcus smiled, for he knew he had found his true home.
