TITLE: If Jesus Had Come as a Woman

I took some women's courses in college - something I would NOT advise young Christian women to do - and it got me to thinking about Jesus. I love Him with my whole heart, but I would love a daughter of God just as much if that had been His plan. This poem is to try and show that God's love is not a respector of gender.
If Jesus had come as a woman,
With angels announcing her birth,
Would shepherds have hurried to find her,
This woman that God sent to earth?
Or would they have mocked the absurd proclamation?

If Jesus had come as a woman,
Would magi have honored the news
By coming in caravans laden
With gifts for the Queen of the Jews?
Or would they have slighted the great visitation?

If Jesus had come as a woman,
Her birth by the sages made known,
Would Herod have slaughtered the young girls,
Intent on insuring his throne?
Or would he have laughed at the brash indignation?

If Jesus had come as a woman,
Would John have baptized her that day?
Would he have cried out, “Behold her!
God’s lamb come to take sins away”?
Or would he have damned her insubordination?

If Jesus had come as a woman
It’s likely we’d never have heard
For men write of men, not of women,
And think only men know God’s Word.
(A small minded heretic male speculation)

Would all faith’s foundations now falter
If Jesus had not been a man?
Could miracles still have been present
Had God worked an alternate plan?
Could broken limbs still have been mended?
Could hungry hearts still have been fed?
Could multitudes still have been sated
With two fish and five loaves of bread?
Could Lazarus still have been raised up?
Would death have obeyed her commands?
If Jesus had come as a woman,
Could God have used feminine hands?
Could woman have cast out the demons
And ordered them into the swine?
Could woman have walked on the water?
Or changed it into new wine?
Could woman have loved the unlovely?
Could woman have spoken God’s Word?
If Jesus had come as a woman,
Would people have reckoned her Lord?
Or would there have been no redemptive salvation?

If Jesus had come as a woman,
Could she have said “I am the door”?
Could woman have blessed little children?
Could woman have nurtured the poor?
If Jesus had come as a woman,
Would she have been God’s sacrifice?
If her hands and feet had been nailed to a cross
Would her death have paid the price?
If Jesus had come as a woman,
Would millions still trust in that name?
Would Jesus still be the begotten of God?
Would Christendom still be the same?
Or would she have been a bizarre aggravation?

If Jesus had come as a woman,
Would she have fulfilled Heaven’s plan?
Were miracles done by the power of God?
Or were they the works of a man?
A challenging thought for the world’s contemplation.

People laugh and say we should be thankful
For men would not pray to a dame,
But if you will stop and consider,
That’s why in a man’s form God came.
An honest, enlightened, sincere declaration!
