One Saturday morning Ron and Grandmother walked out of her house, down through the front yard and were standing on the gravel beside the busy highway. It was a hot summer morning and they were waiting for Aunt Jane to pick them up and go shopping.
It’s common for the highway to be very busy with large trucks. The wind generated by the fast passing trucks certainly felt good this hot morning. One truck passed-by normally and had proceeded about 30 yards, when the strangest thing happened. One of its huge trailer wheels came loose from the trailer.
The wheel should have rolled away from Ron and Grandmother, but it got tangled under the edge of the trailer and the impact shot the wheel rolling back directly at them.
Grandmother saw the occurrence and yelled for Ron to stand still. She calmly held Ron’s hand as they watched the huge wheel roll in their direction. She held Ron tightly and quickly made two steps backwards toward the ditch. She calmly said, “Ron, I think the wheel will miss us…God willing”.
It was God’s will, because the wheel actually touched Ron’s hip as it sped by them, torn the mail box down, rolled across the ditch and damaged the old yard fence.
Ron never forgot that Grandmother held him tight and prayed. The truck driver realized what had happened and parked his truck several hundred yards away along side the highway. He ran back to offer help if needed. He was relieved to see them both safe, but he immediately used Grandmother’s phone to report the incident to the Highway Patrol.
A patrol car was near by and within minutes an officer was at the scene and preparing a report. When neighbors saw the patrol car they naturally came to see what was happening.
Everyone was amazed at the damage this wheel caused and agreed that God protected Grandmother and Ron.
