Traffic had slowed to a crawl,
Creep a few feet forward and stop, roll and stop.
Patience was wearing thin.
Had they bothered to even glance into the other cars,
They would see the drumming fingers.
The angry animation as people complained into their cell phones.
A few anxious expressions.
Already late. Already too late.
Sirens and lights had long sped past on the narrow shoulders.
Until, at last, they are there at the scene.
The calamity, the tragedy.
Cars mangled to a state almost unrecognizable.
Paramedics feverishly working.
A young woman weeping,
Frail shoulders shaking uncontrollably.
A brief glimpse at the brief moment that changed lives forever.
The impatient fingers stop.
The conversations silenced.
Anxiety morphs to sadness.
Is it too late? Is it already too late?
And for precious moments,
Each driver no longer exists solely alone in their car.
They are transported into this unfolding tragedy.
What if?
Their child,
Their husband,
Their wife,
Their life changed forever.
In a flash, a world altered.
And a single thought resonates.
There but by the grace of God.
Once home, hands held a little longer,
Bedtime hugs a little tighter.
Oft neglected spouses and children wonder why.
Offered prayers more fervent.
An oft neglected God listens.
He knows why
And loves them just the same.
