Kids & Parenting
Why not? For those who are contemplating the idea, just starting, have been homeschooling, or even hate the idea I am going to answer the question, "Why homeschool?" Well, as the child's parent or guardian, you were the first to teach him how to crawl, walk, eat, talk, etc. You were her teacher from the very beginning so why should it be any different?
Your answer to that may be that you aren't advanced enough, don't have the patience, aren't compatible with the child, don't want them to turn out to be idiots, don't have a clue where to start, have a full time job, are a single parent, etc. etc. etc. Whatever your reason may be, just know that if you put your mind to it and find that this is top priority to you, then it can be done!
If you read any of my other homeschooling articles you will find the notion of homeschooling was brought to me by "the little voice inside". You know, that little voice called our conscience, or spirit, that we often don't listen to. The little voice came at the worse time possible. My husband and I had just moved from Tennessee to Missouri where the cost of living was tremendously different. We had more debt (and we still owned a house there at the time) and pay was higher. So moving to Missouri from Tennessee meant we had a hefty house payment for a house that was on the market and less than half of the income. We had to pay rent and keep up our house payment along with other living expenses.
My husband, an entreprenuer, could find no other job in this oppressed location and ended up running a very large printing press with shifts that changed every two weeks. I worked in sales and then at a bank. The two of us did not even make half of the money he alone made in Tennesseee.
Then I became pregnant with our third child. When I am pregnant, I am sicker than sick! I always drop down to 85 pounds due to severe nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. Every week I'd have to go in and hook up to IV's in order to rehydrate and stay alive. This is my pregnancy process. Soon I was laid off of my job.
So there we were barely making ends meet and I as sick as ever when the "little voice" told me that I would homeschool. What a joke and what timing!
Long story short, it took a few years but eventually, I did start homeschooling. We did not have money to purchase a curriculum or books which meant that I had to use what was available. We used library books, materials that were around the house, and the Bible. The Bible is great for every subject! With some creativity and thought, you can choose words for spelling and look up definitions out of the dictionary. There is definitely a lot of history. Children can draw pictures from Bible stories. Math is taught by figuring out the dimensions of Noah's Ark, for instance, or figuring out the years that transpired between events. I could go on and on but I think you get my point.
I learned as the children learned. There is so much information out there and little minds are quick to pick up everything. (We all know this is true!) They are like computers with brand new hard drives and tons of RAM. They have taught me so much!
So you see, it's not a matter of whether you can or can't. It's a matter of priorities. Is it important enough to you to place on your Top Five Priorities List? Is it important enough for you to put your mind to it? As you know, it all starts in the mind. If you want it badly enough, it will happen.
