BROKEN

Have you ever stood on a hot bed of coals
And never felt the heat?
Or fell from a plane, high above the clouds,
And never felt your heart beat?

Have you ever had a really bad dream,
One you couldn’t escape while awake?
And prayed to the Lord, “please rescue me..
Do it now for my sanity’s sake?”

Have you ever been down in a bottomless pit,
With no way out .. no ladder or rope?
Or stood on a cliff looking down at the sea,
Waiting to fall, feeling like there’s no hope?

Have you ever lost your way in the dark,
When you tripped, stumbled and fell?
Reaching out to nothing, cause nothing was there,
Except your own living hell.

Have you ever been broken so deep in your soul,
That no doctor, no one could repair?
When you looked in the mirror, no one was there looking back,
You felt empty and full of despair.

Well, when I lost my husband, I lost my heart,
My love, and my reason for living.
There’s a hole left inside me that can never be filled,
This grief is not one bit forgiving.

I’ll never again feel his breath on my ear,
Or hear those loving words that he said.
I won’t see his smiling face when I rise,
Or hear “I love you” when I lie down in bed.

I’ll never again feel the warmth of his skin,
Or taste his kisses so tender and sweet.
My poor heart is aching .. I can’t catch my breath,
Help me Jesus, to get back on my feet.

How do you mend a heart that is broken,
When time isn’t helping the pain?
Do you just go on, as if nothing has changed,
When an empty shell is all that remains?

I know God had His reasons for taking him home,
And I’m happy he’s pain free at last.
When I see for myself, his most glorious face,
My broken heart will finally be able to rest.

I wrote this a short time after I lost my beloved husband. The pain was close to unbearable, and expressing those feelings in verse was a great release of some of that pain. I still miss him so much, but writing and the help of my two very dear friends, helps me get through the worst and darkest days. I dedicate this to all of those who have lost that very special person in their lives. All I can say is "Let go, and Let God". God Bless and thank you for reading it.
